About this deal

So you start searching for the best baby monitor on the market, and suddenly you’re looking at video monitors, which allow you to study your baby’s visual cues. Is your baby rubbing their eyes and likely to fall asleep again at any moment? Or is your baby crying because they’re uncomfortable and need rescuing? Now that you’ve started to consider video cameras, you find yourself asking: is a static camera good enough? What about when your baby rolls out of frame – wouldn’t it be great to pan the camera around to get a better view of their face? Or follow them around the room once they’re old enough to climb out of the cot. Baby monitors allow you to keep tabs on your little one when you’re not in the same room as they play in their baby bouncer or nap in their cot. The question becomes how extensive you want those tabs to be, as the range of things that can be monitored keeps expanding. The sound quality on this monitor is excellent and with the volume up I could hear my baby’s sleepy breathing. When the parent unit is muted its lights clearly flash whenever your baby makes a noise and the lights appeared sensitive to every sound during my testing. It has five blue lights in a vertical line which indicate an escalating scale, with all of them lighting up when the baby is loud. Using the parent rechargeable unit you can rotate and zoom the full colour camera to adjust the view without having to disturb your little one.

Angelcare AC327 3-in-1 Baby Movement Monitor with Video

Like all mums, I constantly worry about my daughter and this product definitely gives me peace of mind. The Angelcare monitor allows me to hear my daughter clearly if she needs me and I can see her clearly too, even during the night thanks to the night vision mode. The high quality image captured in the nursery is transmitted to the parent unit onto a 7cm LCD touch screen. Meaning you get a crisp and accurate picture of your baby or child and what they are up to. You can switch off the movement part of this monitor and use it as an audio-only monitor like any other. As an audio monitor, it has excellent sound quality, transmits using DECT technology (which is considered more secure), a good range (working throughout my house and garden), and it never lost its connection during my testing.Unfortunately it lost its connection occasionally during my testing. It sounded an alarm to alert me to this loss and flashed a red light to show that the link was broken. I switched the parent unit off and on again and it immediately reestablished connection, but I didn’t find it as reliable as those that appear above on this list. The baby unit can play a range of five soothing sounds, including birdsong, waves and chimes. The box says that it plays five lullabies, which is a questionable definition of the noises available. The sound quality from the baby unit isn’t great so the noises also sound a little fuzzy. It also has a temperature display and you can set a timer for hour-long intervals, starting from two hours.

The cute little halo on the nursery Angel unit it also a night light, which glows with a delicate and soothing blue colour. This can be controlled through the parent unit. You set up the wireless movement sensor exactly as you do with Angelcare’s movement and sound monitor. If you are looking for a leading product that does all of that and have are able to splurge on a high end baby product then the Angelcare AC1100 might be for you.

The Skinny

BT’s Video monitor has a nice large 5-inch screen on the parent unit for you to watch your baby. The picture quality isn’t fantastic. It’s low resolution, so a bit blurry, but good enough to see what your baby is doing and gives a pretty clear view even in low light. The sound quality is excellent and sensitive to the smallest noises. This is a quality, reliable audio monitor which does the basics perfectly and has some nice extra features. Although I thought the monitor was a little expensive and over engineered, the design is really good – it’s an attractive monitor and it does work very well. I think overall, Angelcare do have a really trusted reputation when it comes to monitors and all of their products are attractively designed.

Angelcare AC417 Video, Wireless Movement and Sound Monitor

The only thing I would improve is maybe to minimise the interference noise if both the baby unit and parent unit are close to each other. Tested by mum Gemma Wakefield for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018: Angelcare have been market leader for the last 15 years and have proved time and time again that they produce well designed and effective baby products. They are the first to combine all three types of baby monitor into one product. I really liked using this monitor because it had a reliable connection, decent range and showed me a high quality view of my baby. However it’s pretty pricey for the privilege, particularly when you can’t tilt or pan the camera. The VTech parent unit has a large 5-inch screen like the BT video monitor, displaying a comparable picture quality. It’s really simple to use with clearly marked buttons and a menu which is easy to navigate. The camera pans up and down and from side to side and allows you to zoom in. It also comes with an optional wide-angle lens which easily clips on to the front of the camera.Features such as the movement or visual monitoring can be obtained in alternative products with a lower price tag Nursery unit tilts forward to achieve a better angle, but for some nursery set ups, the tilt angle would not be sufficient if the camera unit was placed on top of a tall cabinet for example. Angelcare specialise in producing movement monitors. If this monitor doesn’t detect any movement in the cot for 15 seconds (including breathing) it will set off a rouse alarm which should prompt any still baby in a deep sleep to wriggle. If no movement is detected after a further five seconds, an alarm sounds on both units. It is pretty to cool to have all of these features at your fingertips and if you are a particularly anxious parent then the Angelcare AC1100 might be really helpful to you. You can pan the camera around, tilt it up and down and zoom in. Like BT’s audio monitor, it’s easy and intuitive to use with all the buttons clearly labelled on the front, apart from how to move the camera, which isn’t instantly obvious. You have to press OK and then the crosshairs appear on the screen and you can use the arrows to direct the camera position.
