This one’s a classic and belongs on any ADHD reading list. Though not exclusively for women, I like it for the case studies. Right off the bat I related to Jim, but in the entire book there were so many relatable moments. My favorite part, aside from the stories, were the lists of practical actions at the end of each section. My Review Generally I do not enjoy reading self-help books. This one grabbed my attention, because as someone with ADHD, and the parent of someone with ADHD, I wondered what new info or help could be gained. I was instantly surprised with how much resonated with me. Topics that I never considered to be ADHD related were suddenly revealed to me. This book is all about "accepting your differences". OK, I get it. Some ADHD women indeed need to hear that. However, it never really explicitly explained what the "differences" are and how to really embrace them. The examples in the books are like "well this girl she used to try to be like others, but now she accepted herself as a person with ADHD so now she's doing better" -- but wait, what and how? What exacly was she trying to do to "be like others" and what/how she accepted about herself? I can't believe someone can write a book just by playing with general meaning vocabularies like this. Sari Solden & Associates was built on a foundation of expertise in ADHD, but is also influenced by minority mental health and multi-cultural considerations, mindfulness-based practices, psychoeducational guidance, narrative therapy, and women’s psychology. In this easy-to-read workbook, Sari Solden and Michelle Frank invite women with ADHD to recognize and challenge a variety of assumptions about themselves and others that may needlessly prevent them from experiencing their own full potential. This is only one of the many passages that will resonate with women who live every day with their ADHD. It has changed me (baby steps) for the better. I will continue to use it as a workbook to try to gain more acceptance of my differences in my every day life. I can’t recommend this book enough.

As for me, the main problem here is the most these clients would need therapy even without ADHD. And you probably should ask for help doing your chores not just because you are struggling with ADHD but because you are not actually obligated to fulfill your gender expectations and to manage all the family stuff alone as a wife. Women with ADHD spend so much time and effort making up for what we believe to be our short comings we don’t realize how important it is to take pride in our strengths. Honestly, we expend so much effort in “fixing” ourselves, we don’t even take the time to look for them. Because they come naturally to us and take very little effort it’s easy to overlook these strengths and take them for granted. For women with ADHD it is natural to pay more attention to our weaknesses. It’s supposed to be empowering, and client stories — to be relatable. But as for me it looked like the narrator’s voice is pityful and they feel really sorry for you and want to guide you. Like you are some little helpless creature not being able to stand for yourself. Michelle Frank, PsyD, is a well-regarded clinical psychologist who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, education, and empowerment of individuals with ADHD.
