The two face a shared struggle as they attempt to try and simply survive. Their lot is one of poverty, and it grinds the energy out of the. It is a very tough life and even though the two girls have each other, even they know that they will not be able to lean on the other one forever and make it through on that shared support alone. Will they return home, to the words from their parents "I told you so" and failure, or will they survive?

The Winter Rose By Katie Flynn |The Works

The story follows the relationship between Cadi and Jez and if they will overcome separation in war time and interference from others, who are determined to split them up, to get revenge. Izzy has to deal with information she finds out about her parents, after escaping her violent father in the first book. Their lives in Liverpool could not be more different that where they have run from, they meet Maria, single handedly running a pub, and this gives them hope that without a man around, they can still stand on their feet. Cadi and Poppy may have a Rhos sensibility, but opening their eyes to the outside world gives them choices-will they remain the girls who want to be remembered for competing at the Rose Queen festival, or do they want to become women of the world? Liverpool brings a tough life for her following the years of the great world war’s end. Kitty finds that she’s always starving and has only rags to wear. She’s the oldest child in her family and takes her drunken mother’s rages while dreaming of running off to find a life that is better than the one she lives. The girls are left looking for work and eventually secure jobs in a local pub. Life takes different turns for the girls, as they relish their independence and we follow their adventures along the way. I wholeheartedly recommend this stunner of a war time romance and the search for a meaningful life. Just loved it.Against their parents wishes, they travel to Liverpool with their heads full of adventure, and the intention of joining up. As they’re both underage, they’re immediately turned away. With their hopes scuppered, it seems they will have to return home with their tails between their legs. Then fate leads them to The Greyhound pub, managed single-handedly by Maria, since her husband left for war. It is a better fate than other infants have met, and the foundling is so cute and helpless that something surprising happens. The baby is not only taken in but the maid that works there, Nellie McDowell, decides to adopt this infant and will raise her up just like an authentic biological sister. Cadi, a young girl, wants to do her bit in WW2-torn Britain and decides to persuade her parents to let her travel to her Aunt with her brest friend and support the war effort in Liverpool. The story is kind of slowly burning, sometimes even a bit on the dull side. A little less could have been more.
