The book contains 50 stories that they promise aren't necessarily the best, but are those that lend themselves well to the written word, with only light editing. These stories are taken from the mainstage show and thus are told by the likes of President Clinton's press secretary, astronaut Michael Massimino, rapper Run DMC, and others. Although these stories had at their core values we can all relate to — being alone, being afraid — I still found it a bit hard to penetrate the world of celebrity. (That some of the stories are by Moth staff, and the book has a preface, a forward, and an introduction, further contributes to the self-congratulatory air.)

There's some line in Anne of Green Gables where Anne describes the ocean as something that blows out the cobwebs of her soul. This is what Catherine Cookson books (at her best) do for me. I'm always sort of driven up and outward when reading my favourites by her, particularly The Moth and Fifteen Streets, and she expresses in me a wonderful sort of restlessness. Maybe its that she's able to pen words to abstract feelings. I dunno. I just know I'm grateful to have read her books. The critics are justified, but at the end of the day, sometimes you gotta accept the formula, roll with it, and see it for the web of feelings it is. If you are ready for something different, and/or if you are in the mood to give a friend a fabulous gift, grab a copy of The Moth. I promise that you will be glad you did.

Example: reading The Lord of the Rings is a visceral, gut-wrenching thing for yours truly. There are chapters where JRRT rips my heart from my chest cavity, jumping up & down on my feels like a sadistic mofo. Yet such woebegone sadness is NOT A CONSTANT. There are brief periods of hope, contentment, & (most important) an overall aura of "Yes, it hurts, but I KNOW these people will make it to something better." Even old-skool rippers like This Other Eden or Stormfire, while epic in their suffering, embrace that oh-so-important glimmer, that pride in an as-yet unrealized period of "this too shall pass." The book becomes a story of two people who are very different, reacting to life through the eyes of what they have learned within their respective classes, finding themselves questioning it. What if all men in Robert's class are not ignorant? How is it that he treats me better than my own family does? Robert find Agnes a woman that he can talk to about serious subjects (such as in books), absent the games he has been subjected to by a number of women of his acquaintance. In short, he finds a woman who actually interests him.

For the StorySLAM, ten participants are chosen at random from a pool of volunteer storytellers to tell a true story (without notes) in the five minute range. Storytellers are scored based on the content of their stories, and their storytelling abilities, by three teams of judges—selected from audience members—on a scale from one to ten. The storyteller with the highest score wins the StorySLAM. Moth is dedicated to my mother, Merlin. She was an incredible woman who raised me and my sisters alone. Mum died at young age when we were in our mid-20s, but I know she would have loved Moth and the way it has been embraced by children, teachers and parents on both sides of the Atlantic. Using Moth in schools With the archives that The Moth has, I can't imagine it was easy to start to narrow down the tales. But more needed to be done. It weakened the best of the stories to share company with so many others, and when lines -- like "straight out of central casting" -- are repeated between tellers, the effect of a description becomes less powerful. Because of the breadth, I can't remember any of the individual tales. And the point of this is the power of the individual tale. Somehow, it called out to me, and I'm glad I listened to my gut and bought the book, as it was honestly one of the few life-altering books in my life.
