This poem is by now a bit too famous for its own good. Yet some masterpieces are so great that they will bear endless repetition without losing their effect, and I suspect that the spiritual balm of this poem’s opening lines (particularly the first) will soothe souls for as long as English is understood: In Shakespeare’s final entry on our list, he challenges the traditional association of love with beauty. It doesn’t matter what his lover looks like — to him she is the most rare and valuable thing in the world. 56. One of Portugal’s greatest poets, Luís Vaz de Camões is known for his lyrical poetry and dramatic epics. ‘Love is a fire that burns unseen’ is an example of the former, reflecting his numerous turbulent love affairs and how each brought a complex fusion of pleasure and pain. 14. The discussion of these poems among passionate Wordsworthians rages on. But the mystery which makes them so powerful remains. The final poem of the set, ‘A slumber did my spirit seal’ is an excellent example of that sort of poem about which there is almost nothing to say which the poem itself does not put infinitely better. It boasts in its short space such compression, beauty, and mystery, you may profitably read it above for yourself. This is a somewhat overlooked poem which appears early in the second volume of the 1800 Lyrical Ballads. It deserves much more attention since it is perhaps Wordsworth’s most successful and mature fable. It relates what Wordsworth himself calls in a headnote to the poem ‘a remarkable Chase’ (that is, a hunt) which gives the well its name. Appropriately, the poem begins in storm and tempest, but also, surprisingly, stillness: In ‘I Love You’, Ella Wheeler Wilcox lays out the tiny moments that add up to why the speaker feels so passionately about her love, before going on to describe the colder attributes she’s not looking for in a relationship. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing opens his Laocoön: An Essay on the Limits of Painting and Poetry (1766) by observing that "the first who compared painting with poetry [ Simonides of Ceos] was a man of fine feeling," [4] though, Lessing makes it clear, not a critic or philosopher. Lessing argues that painting is a synchronic, visual phenomenon, one of space that is immediately in its entirety understood and appreciated, while poetry (again, in its widest sense) is a diachronic art of the ear, one that depends on time to unfold itself for the reader's appreciation. He recommends that poetry and painting should not be confused, and that they are best practiced and appreciated "As two equitable friendly neighbouring states." [5] These two poems, which are explicitly paired together by the poet, are perhaps not his most beautiful, but effectively constitute his poetic and intellectual manifesto in only a few quatrains. But Wordsworth’s poetry is never purely intellectual, and into these two slight poems sneak some of Wordsworth’s most beautiful and memorable lines, which secures them an easy place in a list of his greatest achievements, regardless of their size. Edna St. Vincent Millay’s ‘I think I should have loved you presently’ serves as a subversion of the traditional sonnet form. In the poem, the speaker laments their inability to reciprocate their lover’s earnest affection, instead choosing sweet nothings and superficial flirtation over genuine connection. 42. "Love Sonnet XI" by Pablo Neruda I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair. Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets. Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps. This beautiful love poem is part of Amoretti, a sonnet cycle about Edmund Spenser’s relationship with Elizabeth Boyle. Spenser explains in ‘Sonnet 75’ that — despite the seemingly portentous way his attempts to make a physical monument to his lover by writing her name in the sand is repeatedly foiled — his love for Boyle will never end, and he will do whatever it takes to make it last. 58. Rebecca Hazelton isn’t writing about her soulmate, and she’s aware of that — but that doesn’t make the love they share any less special. 32. "Yours" by Daniel Hoffman I am yours as the summer air at evening is Possessed by the scent of linden blossoms, Niemöller is quoted as having used many versions of the text during his career, but evidence identified by professor Harold Marcuse at the University of California Santa Barbara indicates that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum version is inaccurate because Niemöller frequently used the word " communists" and not " socialists." [1] The substitution of "socialists" for "communists" is an effect of anti-communism, and most common in the version that has proliferated in the United States. According to Marcuse, "Niemöller's original argument was premised on naming groups he and his audience would instinctively not care about. The omission of Communists in Washington, and of Jews in Germany, distorts that meaning and should be corrected." [1] Wordsworth wrote so many sonnets on sundry matters, which are all worth reading, such as ‘ Even as a dragon’s eye‘, ‘ Four fiery steeds impatient of the rein‘, the handful of sonnets translated from Michelangelo’s Italian, ‘Surprised by joy’ (which gave C. S. Lewis the title of his autobiography), ‘ Where holy ground begins, unhallowed ends‘ (aka ‘A Parsonage in Oxfordshire’), the wonderful short sequence ‘ Personal Talk‘, and so the list continues. Really, we are long, long overdue an edition of Wordsworth which treats his sonnets exclusively. Wordsworth the Sonneteer would have a welcome place on my bookshelf—and, I would hope, on many others’.

Daniel Hoffman’s carefully chosen metaphors make ‘Yours’ a truly beautiful love poem. Hoffman’s complete dedication to his lover is obvious — in comparing her to everything from summer evenings to snow-capped mountains, it seems he cannot stop thinking about her throughout the changing seasons. 33. I may be biased as the prizes’ founder, but I had absolutely no hand in the judging, which was done by a five-strong jury chaired by Bidisha.
