About this deal

Wondering which type of sand to put with cement for your concrete mix? To get the best results, use sharp sand. It’s perfect for patios and gardens, and will prevent moles or rats from tunnelling underneath the paving slabs. STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO LAYING A PATIO This applies to the more traditional dry mix of sand and cement with the popular choice being 1 part cement and 4 parts sand. This is for more general building use, but it does work on patios.

How to Build and Lay a Patio | Marshalls

The naming can be confusing because sometimes polymeric sand can be called jointing sand. But for builders, jointing sand is regular sand – no cement added. Then lay your plastic sheet on the ground a short distance from where you are going to use the mortar.

You’ll probably want one tub if you have a patio around 15m2. I know they say you can get 20m2 but if you have wider and deeper joints then it’ll not go as far. My patio area is about 6 metres by 4 metres and I used two tubs to give you an idea of my experience. Another quality alternative to Sika: Jointing Compound Stone Grey Easy Joint 12.5 Kilo Patio Mortar Everything about never seeing a weed on your patio again is ALL to do with how well you prepare. Following this guide will give you the best possible experience through this project. So let’s get started!

Pointing Patios: A How To Guide For a Great Looking Finish

But patios aren’t all the same, so if you want to make the most of yours or extend you should think about some patio ideas. Whatever style you choose, the pointing will still have the same job to do. This is very much the same process as pointing a patio, but you will need to do a little prep beforehand. First you will need to remove the old pointing with a hammer and a bolster or plugging chisel. Weed inhibiting joint sand is used for grooves in new and existing concrete pavements/patios and driveways Once the polymeric sand has set up, heavy rain won’t hurt it. But if you have just finished applying polymeric sand and it hasn’t yet set up – like in the first 24 to 48 hours – then you’ll need to protect your patio from a downpour. Use a tarp or plastic sheet. Sika FastFix is extremely versatile and can be used on many different stones, Flagstones, Cobbles, Indian Sandstone, and Patio slabs to name a few. It’s extremely easy to apply to. Following the clear instructions are a doddle. You only need a brush and a jointing trowel. This patio compound brushes in and is like sand in a joint. So if you’re grouting again or laying a new patio, this is a great choice that won’t let you down. A brush in version is particularly handy if you have uneven stone levels. It’ll help you get it pretty close with a brush before pressing in firmly.

How To Lay Paving Slabs On Sand (Guide)

Before even thinking of laying paving slabs, you need to prepare your patio area. If you’re upgrading paving slabs that are already in place, dig these up before beginning. Dig a depth of around 150mm across the whole area, making sure the soil is evenly compacted. Then tip in the sub-base, raking it into a consistent depth of 100mm. Make sure it’s smooth, flat and firm. To make a DIY mix of sand and concrete, start on a sunny day with more sunny days forecast. The slabs should be dry. Scrape out the old cement or dirt or leaves. Blow off the patio or use a shop vac to vacuum up the debris. This very much depends on what you use for pointing and whether you are doing it yourself or employing a pro.For ant and insect problems: Sika Pave Fix Plus Buff 15KG– currently unavailable but I’m apprehensive to remove it as you may find it somewhere else youtubevideo|(width)425|(height)264|(fs)True|(rel)True|(url)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvEIZLQgN1U|(autoplay)False The joint material has a long lifespan and can endure, many years of permeating rain without losing its weed inhibiting effect The jointing compound wants a 3mm gap (no problem if much larger like 10mm) and in their example they want to highlight an inch depth, despite being a new install, they will still want you to go an inch down on your old patio – this is pretty much the standard and whilst it never guarantees you hold weeds and insects at bay, you give yourself the best possible chance!
