Turn over the first challenge card, read it aloud to everyone and then frantically begin making your ‘ransom note’ type response. There are a few suggested ways to judge who wins the round but mostly I play with a friendly bunch so we take an honest vote accepting if someone else’s response is genuinely better than our own we vote for it. However, if you are playing with particularly competitive people who will always vote for their own, even if it’s rubbish there are other suggested ways to choose a winner to avoid creating war not peace. The game continues until one of the players can’t make a sentence with the word magnets that they have remaining. Individual rounds usually take about 1-2 minutes to make a response (feel free to set a 90 second timer if you like). The whole game takes anywhere from 30-90 minutes, or until you run out of beer. After all of the players have revealed their submissions, it is time to judge who provided the best response.

With 250 absurd prompt cards and new word magnets each turn, Ransom Notes is tears-streaming-down-your-face funny every time you play. The game is structured so there’s not one person who’s “it” and has to sit out the fun. They also stipulated that whoever is judge of the round may chose his own answer as the winner, but it had better be awfully good; and the other players can unanimously overrule him, if necessary. Some of the funniest answers were just a word or two. The game prompts are designed to be appropriate for all groups 14+, but they're open ended, so you can generally make your responses as clean or as dirty as the people playing! Ransom notes are perfect for adult game nights, quirky holiday gifts, and hilarious birthday gifts for smart people. The game is rated 17+ for mature content, but can easily be made family-friendly by removing some of the prompt cards. We enjoyed playing the game but it was quite fiddly and whilst I can see why the magnetic words were so small bigger would have been better for my clumsy fingers. 75ish words is a lot to look through when on a time constraint to make up phrases. This meant that some players, mostly me because I still wanted relatively perfect sentences, could take a longer time causing other players to be left waiting for them to finish. If you want a little bit of fun this could be the game to include in your evening… though the pieces are small so you may still be finding them weeks later if not properly accounted for during each phase of gameplay.

September 2, 2017 Some of the prompt cards mention themes that are a bit adult, i.e. "Where do babies come from?" or "Write a commercial for cocaine." BUT, if you do want to make it entirely family friendly, pulling about 20% of the Prompt Cards should make the game totally PG and playable for all! The game has almost no rules, and no learning curve. It has our family in absolute stitches, and in amazement at the cleverness of people's responses. The game lists itself as 17+, and after a thorough inspection, I can see why. Even the most innocuous words can become hilarious and/or twisted around, but they’ve also included a handful of body parts (“butt”, “booty,” “boob,” “ass,” “genital”), activities (“murder,” “sex,” “seduce”), and other words in the magnets that one may or may not want to set aside (“bitchy,” “sexy”). Also about 20 of the prompt cards (less than a sixth) could be considered somewhere on a scale of silly (“Why is cocaine illegal?”) to direct references to sex acts and porn. And one weird Bernie Sanders reference. You can easily remove these and still have a lot of cards to play with.
