About this deal

Simply untrue. The Sensor is way better than the Rebel offerings, and the AF-P 18-55 DX, 35 1.8 DX, 70-300 DX VR are excellent Lenses, btw. To be fair to babart, this snippet of an article doesn't deserve the title of a "review". As noted by tbcass below, it's possibly the shortest dpr review ever, and I hope it's NOT the start of a new trend. The D3500 does shoot raw files, as you’d expect, but these are 12-bit only, rather than the 14-bit raw files captured by models further up the Nikon range. Will you notice the difference? Probably not, as even a 12-bit raw gives a much wider tone and colour range than regular JPEGs, and for the users this camera is aimed at, the differences are likely to be academic.

Well, for context, I'm a DSLR user who can see advantages and disadvantages in both types of camera. I'll likely add a MILC body to my existing outfit this spring, but I won't be dumping my DSLRs. Not much upgrade since the D3200, other than the battery life increment and connectivity options which i don't need. In viewfinder shooting, the 11 AF points are clustered towards the middle of the frame, but if your subject is near the edge it’s easy enough to focus and then reframe before shooting. You can let the camera choose the focus point automatically or select it yourself; either way it’s very fast, and very positive. Marc, in my second sentence I noted that the D5600 does not have a pentaprism viewfinder. My disappointment regarding the viewfinders in the D3xxx and D5xxx series was the point of my comment. If you shoot in low light/low contrast, you need a camera able to handle high ISO, if you shoot in fierce light and high contrast you probably need a camera with a huge dynamic range. But as for advancement, you gain huge benefits when you allow the image sensor to see the scene. For one thing, AF coverage is still pathetic on DSLRs compared to mirrorless. Compare the AF coverage of an A6000 from 2014: We might scoff at the D3500’s relatively small weight reduction compared to the D3400, but in truth its out-of-the-box weight of just 415g is actually really impressive. It’s only 124mm wide, which means in all it’s not that different in the hand – or on the shoulder – as many mirrorless cameras. It’s a major thinking point for those who hold the opinion that mirrorless cameras have sounded a death knell for the DSLR. The D3500 isn’t just Nikon’s cheapest and simplest DSLR, it’s also its lightest, weighing just 415g, body only, and that’s with the battery and a memory card. It will usually come with a lightweight 18-55mm AF-P kit lens which has a retracting mechanism to make it more portable when it’s not switched on. It’s not quite as small as a mirrorless camera, but the battery life alone makes a good case for the classic DSLR design, and the D3500 but is light, fast enough and cheap enough to make a great travel camera. Compatible devices are those capable of acquiring location information and those that support BLE (iPhone® 5S and later, iPad® 5th Generation and later, iPhone X or later).

A helpful Guide Mode is available to aid in becoming acquainted with the D3500 through a series of step-by-step tutorials.Nothing more nothing less. So I figure getting an up and running Z50 with lenses and FTZs will cost a bit more, which makes the comparison with the D3500 even more ludicrous! The Nikon EN-EL14a battery may be slim, but it's enough to power the D3500 for an amazing 1,550 shots.
