The dmesg output and mpsutil output shows that it detected *something* new when hot-plugged into New Slots, but FreeNas is not getting updated to attach them. I know firmware 20 is out, and I now wish to upgrade = hopefully then it will detect hotswap. (unless i'm unaware of something) You need the absolute latest firmware (mid-June, version 10, I believe) to enable proper communication between the 9211-8i and the HP SAS Expander. When using the combo of LSI SAS 9211-8i —> HP SAS Expander —> Hitachi 5K3000 3TB drives, the Hitachi drives will only connect at SATA 150 speeds. Drives will connect at SATA 600 when directly connected to the HBA.mps0:

I went therefore ~65% over my original budget but at least this setup allowed me to connect up to 8 additional disks. IT vs IR Firmware Instead of Megarec.exe, i just ran the sas2flsh.exe -c 0 -o -e 7 command to erase it first, and hoped for the best.If you want to keep using the IR-mode and are happy with the firmware's version then you don't have to do anything. Disclaimer & warning Reboot (should be much faster now in IT-mode) and if you want get into the card's BIOS => it should look very different compared to before.
