I really enjoyed this book. It was definitely lighter on the battles compared to the first two, but it was really spent developing our main character going forward, Pericles, and setting up for some battles and adventures to come. Usually books that are mostly spent setting future books up I find a bit of a drag to read, but there was still some great action and politics at play and we got to see a bit more about life and politics in Athens outside of active war times. The Gates of Rome is the first in a series set in the Roman Empire. Having submitted numerous novels to publishers in the past, and had all of them rejected, he was surprised when this manuscript set off a major bidding war among five large publishing houses. This central character of this novel is Pericles, the younger but only remaining son of Xanthippus, the hero of the two novels of the Athenian series. Our 3rd person point-of-view comes from his perspective . While this is termed as the 1st of two books in a new series called The Golden Age, it also serves as a de facto 3rd book of the Athenian series as it continues on in the timeframe and the characters presented there. Iggulden released a four-book series, theWars of the Rosesseries, starting withStormbirdin 2013,Margaret of Anjou(calledTrinityin the United Kingdom) in 2014,Bloodlinein 2015, andRavenspurin 2016.

Shipments to the USA & Canada: It is a fact that there are very few successful novels about the great age of democratic Athens. Someday someone will do Cimon justice. Pericles the Athenian by Rex Warner is very good in a rather intellectual way. The best existing novels are about the years of Athens’ defeat in the Peloponnesian War, Mary Renault’s The Last of the Wine and Stephanie Plowman’s Road to Sardis, Tom Holt’s The Walled Orchard. The author’s attempt is not entirely unsuccessful, but I suspect the target audience does not include a curmudgeon like me. The book opens to a map of the region, as well as a pronunciation guide – which I usually love. Who doesn’t love a book with a map? In 2017, Iggulden published a historical fiction novel called Dunstan, [11] chronicling the life of the 10th century monk and political adviser to the Saxon Kings of England, St. Dunstan.
