About this deal

Only Four Roses uses five yeast strains with two mashbills to create 10 completely different Bourbon recipes. For this Single Barrel product, I always hand select each barrel from the same recipe at the peak of its maturity for its robust and distinctive character. You’ll notice rich aromas of fruit and delicate flavours of apricot and pear balance perfectly with notes of oak, light spice and caramel.” Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon is the perfect addition to any bar and should serve a variety of palates well. Don’t be scared off of the high-rye nature of its liquid. There is plenty of sweet and fruity notes to love. The bottom line is you don’t have to like rye whiskey to like Four Roses’ most popular mash bill. Final Thoughts Sour Mash: A fermentation technique used by almost all bourbon distillers that employs pre-fermented mash from a previous distilling in a new mash. The sour mash prevents wild yeast from entering the mash and causing infections. Nose: True to it’s high-rye mash bill, the first scents I find remind me distantly of a rye whiskey. Licorice/fennel notes combine with a nice amount of fruit like cherry and citrus. Pine needles and cinnamon give it a spicy and earthy aroma. Sweet notes like molasses and vanilla are also present. There’s not really much oak on the nose, but I do find some leather that lets me know of its age.

Cinder toffee and rum and raisin fudge with an oaky spiciness. It is quite dry and peppery but with plenty of sweetness to balance it out. Some vanilla in there too. Not much alcohol burn on the nose. First of all this is not worth the money. If you love Bourbon and live in Canada, go out and buy a bottle of Wild Turkey 101. Do not waste your time with this one. There is just too much a strong contradiction in flavor with the deep deep bitter oak mixed with a sweet floral overtone. I would trust the nose and palate of master distiller Brent Elliott over me. I’m sure this goes without saying. My take on this dram however was much different. If this bourbon tasted and smelled the way it’s described I can guarantee you I would not have liked it as much from what I got out of it based on my palate. During the 1950s, Seagram’s made a strategic decision to end the distribution of Four Roses whiskey in the United States due to diminishing interest in this type of spirit. Surprisingly enough, despite waning popularity domestically – other countries such as Japan continued strong demand for Four Roses bourbon.Nose, Palate, and Finish I rank regardless of cost. Value (recent addition) is ranked based on taste vs price.

On the palate, its full-bodied texture is nothing short of smooth. Vanilla, cocoa and honey notes dominate the flavour profile while a gentle smokiness and subtle cinnamon hint leave an unforgettable impression. The finish trails long with sweetness that lingers in warmth; aromas and flavours collaborate to offer a complex indulgence. As caramel sweetens delicately against oak’s smoky spice & cinnamon tang, you’re presented with a pleasing, lingering aftertaste. I own a good deal of Four Roses single barrels. I often get asked what my favorite recipe is, but it’s hard to answer that question since it all depends on my mood. OESK was my first love but I’ve started to resign myself to thinking that all K, O and V yeast strains start to taste the same after a while (meaning if you’ve had one, they all start to taste the same). But it’s been the F recipes that have really challenged my perspective of Four Roses and what their bourbon is capable of. The more I get continue on with this bourbon journey, the more I’ve appreciated OBSF and OESF barrels. I may actually consider them some of my favorite recipes these days which is a big change from what I thought 2 years ago. Combining the two mashbills with these 5 yeast strains results in their 10 bourbon recipes. Recipes 1-5 use Mashbill B and recipes 6-10 use Mashbill E. See a screenshot of all 10 of the Four Roses recipes in the diagrams below. Four Roses have 10 different bourbon recipes which are created with 2 different mashbills and various yeasts. The Four Roses Single Barrrel is from the OBSV recipe. The mashbill is 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley.Let’s find out what I thought of this bottle by digesting the eloquent words of my Four Roses Single Barrel review (please don’t be disappointed that they are not actually particularly eloquent): About the Distillery
