About this deal

Well, OpenWrt is a voluntary project so unless someone with ER4 puts in time to get it working there will not be support for it. USG is the entry level router/firewall product in this series. The other options include USG Pro 4 and USG XG-8 which are much more powerful in terms of hardware performance. Hardware Specs There are many processes/features that can take advantage of the offloading engine. One of the most basic examples isIPv4 traffic forwarding. Without offloading enabled, IPv4 traffic will be routed via the CPU and will be limited to around 300Mbps on the EdgeRouter Lite (ERLite-3). With offloading enabled, the throughput will be about 950Mbps.

NOTE: It is currently not possible to enable IPv6 offloading for PPPoE and VLANs simultaneously. IPsec offloading requires a device reboot to become active/inactive Compared to USG, the only difference in features is that ER models do not support IPS/IDS like the USG. If you really need to have such a functionality in your network, you can always use an open source IDS software (like snort for example) and just send traffic to it for inspection (with a mirroring port/VLAN). When there are no more “fixme” tags left, delete this one too, along with the that encloses it. I’m getting the same internet speeds with the USG, that I was getting with the ERPoE-5. I have 75Mbps connection with 15Mbps uploads. I also have Threat Management enabled. See the screenshot below. Now, let’s talk connectivity. With a diverse range of ports, the EdgeRouter 4 is all set to cater to your multiple devices. Its stable connection ensures that it doesn’t fumble even when you’ve got a house full of gadgets all hooked up. While it may not give those best long-range routers a run for their money in terms of sheer distance, it’s perfect for most standard spaces. Setting Up, Simplified Unfortunately we cannot provide any direct support for setting up your own OpenVPN server. The above speed (500 Mbps with QoS enabled) is still impressive and certainly much bigger than regular consumer grade routers. We have a SonicWall as our business router for around 50 ish people. Recently it was getting super slow, and it turns out the fans in it died and it was overheating. I've replaced it with a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4, and everything sped right up, and so we now get the speed we're paying for from our ISP. When high throughput is flowing on the router and the traffic is not offloaded, you will see an increase in CPU usage. When traffic is offloaded the throughput will be higher and CPU usage will remain low. Using a tool like iPerf / iPerf3 is a common way to generate and test throughput. It is important to not use the EdgeRouter as the server or client for iPerf when running the test, as the routers are designed to route/forward traffic and not to generate it. So on one side, we got the speed of the routers but the other big difference between the two is the interface. The big advantage of the USG is that you can manage it within in Unifi Controller. By adding a USG to your network you will get full network insight starting at your internet connection all the way through the client devices. Configuring an Unifi USG

Hardware comparison is not the same as for PC where you are running the same OS. Routers are not running the same software so software programming plays a big part in performance. For now home with 500/500 or below, I can't see a reason why ER-X won't fit and perform well. ubnt has promised to looking into and enabling the extra 1Gbps pipe. If that really happens, ER-X will still be a killer deal for home up to 1000/1000. If you search on Unifi USG vs EdgeRouter you will find two common answers; the EdgeRouter is difficult to configure and the USG is slower. Both are true, but there is more to it. USG and EdgeRouter compared So I don’t think the AP is limiting the throughput. But it might be some settings in my Edgerouter. Is there a good tutorial on how to setup the edgerouter and its firewall? I want a safe network, but not 70% of the capacity I paid for being limited by some setting I missed. If you are not a power-networking user and want a more user-friendly and easier way to configure your device, then USG is easier to manage and configure compared to EdgeRouter. However, keep in mind that the controller management software of USG offers only a subset of all the features actually supported by the device.Obviously, the EdgeRouter 4 can be easily used in larger offices or enterprise networks and can handle the traffic sent to it at the fraction of the cost of buying a router from another brand (plus, it works also as a firewall as well). Management In this section I will discuss the EdgeRouter (both version 4 and Lite) and see how they compare with USG.
