The Bissell HydroWave is designed for easy storage, with its telescoping handle sliding down to make it easier to put the carpet cleaner into a cupboard. With the handle down the cleaner is just 870mm tall; with the handle out the full size is 1120 x 380 x 250mm. There’s a fairly hefty 10.2kg weight, although as this is an upright cleaner, you should only have to lift it occasionally to get it upstairs or over the odd obstacle. This model’s not especially easy to stow for those who are tight on storage space, but it’s an exemplary performer nonetheless, even if it doesn’t come with a hose for detailed spot cleaning.

Set up is a bit more involved than others listed here, and there’s only one sachet of cleaning fluid included. The large dirty water tank is also difficult to empty when completely full, but the clean water tank can be removed so refilling from the tap is easy.

In the box you also get a generous 750ml of Bissell Wash & Protect Pro Stain & Odour cleaning solution, a small measuring jug to make it simpler to pour the correct amount, and a large plastic moulded base for the cleaner to sit on. The base has two functions and, while its most obvious use is simply to catch drips as the machine dries out, it can also be filled with clean water and used to rinse out the machine when it’s finished. The ProHeat 2X Revolution uses two rows of rotating brushes to lift the pile and remove ingrained dirt. Both water tanks (clean and dirty) are the same size and both are very easy to remove. However, you will need to measure the detergent before pouring it into the clean water reservoir so don’t lose the provided measuring cap. It’s an effective carpet cleaner, however. Switching the machine on will set its rotating brushes and suction off, while a trigger on the handle releases a 2% mix of Bissell’s cleaning fluid (of which 236ml is supplied) and warm water. Squirt a bit of that into the carpet, then let the brush do its work. It wasn’t as hard-working in our tests as more expensive models, but it does an excellent job for the price. It earned top marks in the carpet test, with around 90% of stains removed after only a few sweeps. Our carpet was left damp rather than wet and the machine also lifted the carpet pile, making it look as good as new.
