About this deal

This works because the Leviton who writes this book clearly doesn't see the world that way anymore. This is its own reassurance. Knowing he becomes an adult who can explain this situation to you and understand what his young self was doing wrong, why he frustrated and annoyed people, is a sneak peek at the resolution and means you never have to worry too much about him. Which is good, because otherwise I would have worried a lot. To Be Honest shares the stories of leaders who have acted with purpose, honesty, and justice even when it was difficult to do so – including in-depth interviews with CEOs and senior executives from companies like Patagonia, Cabot Creamery, Microsoft, Best Buy and many more. Ever since he could remember ("since he was born" is how he'd put it) Michael Leviton has always given and expected complete and utter honesty. Not just in instances that demand it but in every little thing. His parents were mostly to thank for instilling this integral trait in him from the very beginning along with the problems it seemed to have caused during every stage of life thus far. Questioning his school teachers' directives, making his peers uncomfortable and becoming a fixture to endless torment from girls was all in a day's work for Michael from kindergarten all the way into his thirties. I liked Savannah and thought she was definitely a fun protagonist--she has a strong voice and she's just a great person that you'd want to be friends with. I think Savannah herself is probably the best part about this book, because she really feels super genuine. LOVE RELATIONSHIP - including extended families - are COMPLICATED! It’s amazing anyone ever stays together!

Falling in love- meeting each other’s families- learning each others history was much easier than learning each other’s subtle beliefs, values, boundaries, expressive styles, religious differences, and emotional needs. Told in an impressively lighthearted but eloquent manner, the author places honesty under the microscope and dissects and scrutinizes it by asking essential questions. Are white lies really necessary? Would it be best to be blunt? What happens when we sugar coat things? What happens when we don't? All these curiosities are answered in as Leviton describes in great detail his unorthodox relationship with his parents and how what they've ingrained in him his whole life seems to be at the root of his shortcomings. The funny: At the age of 4, Leviton's grandmother takes this little Jewish boy to see Santa at the mall. After explaining to him that Santa has a magical sleigh and travels around the world leaving presents under everyone's Christmas tree, she has this dubious little boy sit on Santa's lap. When asked what he wants for Christmas, he replies, " 'I'm Jewish.' I have never read a book about a plus-size protagonist who didn't want to lose weight, nor has the story line ever involved anything other than the protagonist being fat. It was so freaking refreshing to read about Savannah, who is totally happy with her body the way it is. And what's even better is that this book isn't about Savannah being fat. Instead, it's about a toxic mother-daughter relationship, a high school romance, and an awesome take down of misogynistic gym teacher! Wow! It's like a plus size character was actually allowed to have a regular story without their weight defining them. What a concept!

Those in the highest levels of global influence would do well to snap out of it and “reset,” based on a thorough TBH read. It would also be fantastic in some form as curriculum in K-12. But the lessons are deeply and immediately relevant to us all. Gift this book to yourself and others you care about today. A boy explains to his teacher he is late to school because of giant ants! A chain of events, including cannonballs, evil ninjas, and an elephant parade followed this! An honest person is someone truthful and reliable. They are typically fair-minded and have a strong sense of integrity. On the other hand, a dishonest person is deceitful and untrustworthy. They often have little regard for others and often act out of self-interest. My personal opinion about Michael doesn't much affect my opinion about the book. I thought it was an interesting and entertaining memoir, however I was expecting it to be a bit more humorous than it actually was. The writing was solid and technically good but it comes across as dry and sterile at times. Not what I would expect from a memoir. I wanted to feel more of his personality through the writing, not just the anecdotes.

I cannot tell you how incredibly refreshing this is! I love that the book, itself, is not obsessed with its plus-size main character. Maggie Ann Martin actually allows us to look past Savvy's weight into other aspects of her life, and it's a shame that books like this are so few and far between." — NPR To Be Honest is a fun, breezy and affirming story about how you #LoveYourBody because #AllBodiesAreGoodBodies. From being fat to openly and happily living as gay, the story immensely surrounds itself with an attitude of acceptance and gave readers a strong message on self-love and importance. “There’s no expiration date on acceptance.” Thank you to NetGalley, MacMillian Children’s Publishing Group – Swoon Reads, Xpresso Book Tours and Maggie Ann Martin for providing me an eARC in exchange for a fair and honest review! And let’s not forget how Savannah meeting George, her best friend’s cousin and an absolutely talented saxophonist, gave a light and fuzzy spin into the story. The chemistry between them was 100% delightful. I love how they started off as friends like how real romance sparks and thankfully that family’s summer cookout with the Morenos happened. It was dreamy, sweet and feels like it’s truly meant to be for both of them. Our main girl, Savannah is dealing with a mother, who recently divorced, became obsessed with losing weight and was a weight loss show and now is a poster child for it. Savannah and her mother have a very strained relationship at best and her sister, Ashley (whom she is very close to) is moving away to college - which means she will have to deal with her mother's obsessive ways by herself. This what the story focuses around the most - her family and coping with all the new changes and challenges. She does have a few other things going on though, such as a new boy taking interest in her and doing an expose piece on the boys sports team with her best friend Grace. I wish that the subplots (one about Savvy's journalism investigation and the other about Savvy's mother) had been better developed, but I think YA readers will enjoy this!

Her father was the worst character for me, He was simply mean and selfish, I know he has his own reasons but that didn’t convince me. Colette explores her new neighbourhood, and another child asks what she is doing. Not knowing what to say, she says she is looking for her pet, a parakeet. Soon, community members search for the (fake) pet, which gets more impressive every time Colette talks about it. Finding the lost bird gives Colette the perfect opportunity to make new friends.

That’s a waste of money. We had plenty of working twin sheets already,” Ashley said. Always the practical one, she was. Ashley’s brain was constantly in conservation mode while mom’s brain was always in excess mode. Especially in the past two years, after Mom and Dad’s divorce, Ashley has had to be the voice of reason in our home.

The author begins to be purposefully dishonest, in what seems to be a social experiment to determine if this will make more people like him. I expected there to be a little more self-reflection by the end of the book, but the conclusion seems to be that his over-honest approach is superior, and just not appreciated enough by ‘most people’: Based on 15 years of research, To Be Honest explains how four factors (Clear Identity, Accountability, Governance and Cross-Functional Relationships) affect honesty, justice and purpose within a company. When these factors are absent or ineffective, the organizational conditions compel employees to choose dishonesty and self-interest. But when done well, the organization is 16 times more likely to have people tell the truth, behave fairly and serve a greater good.

George- The love interest here who also happens to be Grace’s cousin. I knew this guy was going to be a favorite of mine the minute he corrected Savvy for thinking he wasn’t part of the family based on his more Caucasian appearance. George is also blonde, tall, and slender and very much Colombian. George is tutored by Savvy in math & all throughout we see him take a real interest in Savvy. Legit I wish I had a George in my life at 17 OMG do we have actual good fat rep?!?! Even a model on the cover who is a beautiful fat model! I'm in heaven! Thank you to the book gods for making this happen! I wish I had this type of novel when I was younger.Leviton was raised to always tell the truth. Wasn't everyone? Nope, not like this! All truth, all the time. No white lies to spare feelings. No sugarcoating. This certainly makes Leviton a unique kind of adult. People say they want the truth, but when they get it, it's often too hard to swallow. His complete honesty causes problems in job interviews and in personal relationships. In addition to very funny stories, the reader also gets to come along as Leviton grows and changes and we get to see some change in his family as well.
