About this deal

Morpurgo is a name I usually read when I see a new book by him, I've enjoyed many of his reimagined fairy tales in recent years, so I was happy to try this. I was reminded recently of Heidi, a book for children and those who love children by the Swiss author Johanna Spyri. I was particularly fond of the story of Heidi and her grandfather because I had a very close relationship with my own grandfather, my father’s father, with whom I used to stay when my parents were away on lengthy business trips. It was my grandfather who introduced me to the Snowman. I remember that winter because it had brought the heaviest snow I had ever seen. Snow had fallen steadily all night long and in the morning I woke in a room filled with light and silence, the whole world seemed to be held in a dream-like stillness. It was a magical day… and it was on that day I made The Snowman.'

Sir Michael Morpurgo has taken the original story as drawn by Briggs, added Christmas essences from the Channel 4 film and added Morpurgo magic! The idea that a child might be lonely and both ostracized and bullied by classmates at school because he has a stammer is sadly all too real. The idea that a new friendship, from not just one but many snowmen who do not judge James by his speech fluency and thus help him overcome his stammer is not just magical, but clinically accurate. The snowman's friendship and kindness helps James to find his words, his fluency, his confidence. The animated film was first broadcast on Boxing Day in 1982 and has been shown almost every Christmas since. The design of the coin features the young boy dressed in his pyjamas and dressing gown and the snowman holding hands and dancing.Raymond has won many awards and accolades throughout his career, including the Kurt Maschler Award, The Children’s Book of the Year, the Dutch Silver Pen Award, and the prestigious Kate Greenaway Award twice for The Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme Treasury and Father Christmas. I am part of the generation who has watched The Snowman every Christmas since my memories begin. It's a part of my childhood, now part of my own children's, and we have both the original wordless comic strip book and the TV adaptation version. So yes - fans. Everyone knows the story of a young boy building a snowman only to find him come alive during the night.

I’m a huge fan of Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman – I remember reading the picture book in the library as a young child, and I have such a fondness for the film adaptation that’s on TV every year. I can’t resist watching it even now as a grown adult! So when I heard that Michael Morpurgo was writing a novella based on the original book of The Snowman I was super intrigued and knew I had to get my hands on a copy! I’m so happy to say that I really enjoyed it! So yes, very similar to the original. There are a few changes but in general the story follows a similar route to Briggs'. A wordless beginner book that tells a magical story of a boy and his snowman. My Nephew loves this story and it might be why he still loves snowmen so much. The pair of the boy and snowman share a magical evening together exploring the world and flying through the night. It must have been a really warm day because that snowman melted away really really fast. The Snowman was published by Hamish Hamilton in 1978 as a wordless picture book and it has gone on to sell over 5.5m copies in various formats around the world. Producer John Coates created an animated version of The Snowman for Channel 4, it was first broadcast on Boxing Day 1982 in Channel 4’s inaugural year and has been shown every Christmas since.

Aici regasim povestea baietelului James care isi dorea ca de Craciun sa ninga si sa primeasca o bicicleta de la Mosu. The illustrations are simple with plenty of colors which personally for me I felt like I had time traveled to a simpler time where smart phones didn't clog our day-to-day activities and we got to the innocence and pure joy of a child during christmas time. They adapted this story into a television special which I haven't seen but I can sure imagine how impactful it can be towards the imagination of a child.
