This is a really impressive debut novel written by a British author who succeeded in creating a vivid small-town-America setting. I will definitely be following Mr Whitaker to find out what he will come up with next. I'm also hoping there'll be an audiobook in the future so I can revisit this and hear these characters. The child abduction starts off the mystery element of this novel and the reader gains a deep insight into its effect on this small community, how it affects the mother and the policeman obsessed with the case. But this is far more than another missing child procedural, as the author allows us to glimpse into the obscure lives and relationships of some other townsfolk, too. Several fascinating plot strands with plenty of drama and secrets. The characters were truly memorable. This is a small town where nothing is as it seems, and everyone has something to hide. And as the investigation draws towards a climax, prepare for a devastating final twist . . . This was a very entertaining read. A missing child case in a small town in America, a small town where almost everyone has secrets- far too many people with secrets really! but who cares?! It was well done and funny but also a genuine whodunnit. I didn't guess..the characters were varied and interesting. My favourites were Manny, the teenager and his friends and family. Chris Whitaker paints observant and kind portrayals of these people. The POV changes frequently so you need to pay attention. Although this book was laugh out loud funny at moments, it was also really dark and touched on some very serious topics. There were certain moments where I found the book quite depressing but weirdly that only added to my enjoyment of the book. Whitaker rollt das Verschwinden des kleinen Harry vom Ende her auf, was perfekt zum Titel des Romans passt. Er konzentriert sich auf die kalifornische Kleinstadt und ihre Bewohner*innen, schafft vielschichtige Charaktere und erzeugt eine permanent düstere Stimmung. Hmmmmm....ich muss leider sagen, dass mich dieses Erstlingswerk doch sehr enttäuscht hat ...Nach " Von hier bis zum Anfang ", dass mich restlos begeistern konnte, hat dieser Roman für mich wirklich einige Schwächen....!So this hodgepogdge of characters are interlaced in a strange way, all the while tying to find their own way, and the boy who has disappeared. The story is not about Harry really, more so about the strange individuals that make up the town. Leaves, bark and acorns were believed to heal many medical ailments, including diarrhoea, inflammation and kidney stones. Three-year-old Harry Monroe goes missing and the whole of America turns its attention to one small town, Tall Oaks. There are numerous suspects and lots of offers of help for the desperate mother Jess. I don't even know what I would compare this to, it is too off beat. It is its own, and being a debut, I think this author wouldn't be looking for comparisons. I imagine he is comfortable with this being what it is.

Every emotion is felt reading this book, there are laugh out loud moments as well as tearful ones. I loved reading about the wanna be gangsters Manny and Abe, some of dialogue between them had me in stitches it was so well written. There are lots of secrets and lots of suspects throughout the novel resulting in a great read.
