Invaluable for a multitude of tasks from bow-drilling to making improvised snow-shoes, you should always have a hank of paracord with you. Genuine 550-lb breaking strain paracord has a number of internal strands that can be stripped out and used for tasks such as sewing repairs or making a fishing line. Also, after recently getting my ‘Knife and Axe’ certificate at scouts, i was looking for a good sheath knife and was wandering if you knew of any that weren’t too expensive.
The goal is to store as many “useful” items in the tin as possible. The keyword there is “useful.” One of the biggest issues with pre-made Altoid survival tins is that they cram as many items in as possible, even if they aren’t all super useful or aren’t as useful compared to other items. As an example, why store 3-5 bandages when you can put one large piece of medical tape in there instead? That said, after something Mors Kochanski said at the booshmoot this year I have had a bit of a re-think about survival kits. As Mors pointed out, if you cant get a drink or sufficient sleep you will break down in two days, make mistakes and die. Aye shout out if work etc brings you this way… I understand one of your former colleagues might be heading this way as well. Keep in mind, this kit and others that you might see or read about should not be taken as gospel. There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” survival kit. Depending on where you live, your kit may differ from one region to the next. Granted, there are a number of givens for most survival kits, but this is due to the same basic necessities shared by all people.N- Navigate yourself out of the situation if help doesn’t appear. Bear in mind that rescuers may be looking for you in your last known location. If Rescue tells you to stay where you are, you do just that! Many Preppers have what is a called an everyday carry kitso they are never left without the means to survive regardless of the situation. As well as tablets to purify the water - these are normally added to suspect water, shaken around and left for a half hour to kill the bacteria before drinking. [ one tablet per one litre of water ] But always remember, we are talking full on survival here, meaning keeping yourself alive using only the tools in a small tin.I had an excellent weekend on the 3 day survival course. Still, it is important to remember that even the most complete Altoids survival tin is not designed to sustain you. As such, just because you have the tin does not mean you should rest easy if you find yourself in a situation to need it. Instead, your first step should be to assess your situation and figure out a plan to resolve it. The tin is simply designed to present a handful of items that will help you out along the way.Where Mors roams, Canada, I doubt a whistle is going to make that much difference if you’re lost. A signal fire/mirror (shiny part of the cup) is much more likely to attract attention of a search plane!
