About this deal

As an example, we can look at the BenQ HT2150ST. Let's say we wanted a screen size of 150" and need to know how far away to place the projector. This model has a throw ratio between 0.69 and 0.83, so our math looks like this:

If space is really tight, you might want to consider a short throw or ultra-short throw projector, which can create big images on your screen or wall from incredibly short distances – as little as 10cm for a 50in image in some cases. The downside is the projected image tends to suffer more from geometric distortion. Other things to consider:We’ve explained the difference between short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors above, and the screen size will depend on how close you put the projector to the wall or screen. Before you buy, it’s worth thinking about where you can put the projector in your home. But some of today's projectors, particularly UST models, are as capable and connected as any smart TV, with many models running Anroid TV or another TV OS and offering streaming apps from big-name services such as Prime Video or Disney+ pre-installed. All you need to do is log in with your account details and you can use the app just as you would on a TV. The key advantage of ultra short throw (UST) projectors? Giving you a big image from close to the screen, so you don't have to run cables through walls and ceilings. The key advantage of the Epson LS800? It has an even shorter throw than most. It can actually fill a 120-inch wall-mounted screen without having to pull the furniture it's resting on away from the wall.

First, resolution. If you’re looking for a projector to watch movies, then make sure the model you buy is Full HD (with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080). You will come across plenty of cheaper office or portable projectors, but they’ll have limited resolutions of 800 x 600, 800 x 480, 1,280 x 720 or 1,024 x 768. As such, they might be fine for showing PowerPoint slides or streaming Netflix in the garden, but for sports, games and home cinema use, you really need to be able to watch 1080p content at the native resolution. Make Full HD your minimum spec. The W1800 sits squarely in BenQ’s CineHome section, where its focus on serving up a cinematic experience on a budget serves it extremely well. You’ll need the space – this is a large and heavy model that’s nearly 70 cm in width and more than 12 kg in weight – so it’s not ideal for smaller rooms, but we love that you can get such a big image from a projector that’s placed just 2.3 cm from the wall. There is a solid selection of apps via Android TV software, including Google Play, Prime Video and YouTube (although Netflix is not supported). We like the portability of a battery-powered projector; it is safe enough for a child six and above to use without supervision in whichever room takes their fancy. Brainstorm recommends eight and above, but we think (and have witnessed) a sensible younger child interacting with the planetarium, and we found that was fine too. It can be put out of reach of toddlers and controlled by their parents.

Much like the LG CineBeam HU715Q, it's a 4K fan's dream, with crisp imagery, brilliant illumination for darker scenes, and plenty of apps to connect your streaming services or beam your smartphone content over Bluetooth or Apple AirPlay. The disks are 'chunky' so easy to hold, and robust so they won't break if dropped by a playful child (Image credit: Lorna Jordan) What’s more, the auto-focus and auto-keystone correction features mean you don’t need to spend hours tinkering to get a high-quality image; a real plus with a projector that might not be set-up permanently. Meanwhile, the built-in 15W audio system gives you sound that’s good enough for casual entertainment, if a little brash and shouty if you turn the volume up too high. The NZ8 is undoubtedly expensive, but the pricing of JVC’s new line-up is intended to reflect the comparative cost of 4K laser projectors from Sony. Interestingly the NZ8 currently has no direct competitor, so if you want uncompromising performance, peerless HDR tone mapping, comprehensive features and a high degree of future-proofing performance, this remarkable projector is in a class of its own. Some people argue that no pixel-shifting scheme qualifies as "real" 4K. However, most will tell you that they can't see any difference between images produced by projectors with native 4K chips and the best pixel-shifting models, including Epson's models that put lower resolution on screen. Modern models are cheaper and better than you’d think and can create huge images far bigger than the equivalently priced LCD or OLED TV. But which one should you buy? To the untrained eye, one projector usually looks much like another. However, there’s a whole world of technology inside these often plain-looking boxes.BenQ’s decision to focus with the W1800 on what we guess could be considered good old-fashioned home cinema values has paid off handsomely. Its pictures might not be the showiest around, but they’re refined, natural, authentic and, to use that word again, cinematic. The LS12000 is a beefy (we’re talking 50 pounds) projector with a 3LCD system inside. It provides powerful color and white light output, strong contrast, and no artifacts we could detect during our testing. Its immaculate picture doesn’t struggle to overcome bright lighting conditions, but when we turn out all the ambient light, it steps up to simply blow us away. Noise: Most projectors have fans inside and not all are particularly quiet. How quiet a projector is should be a major consideration, especially if you’re going to position it near to where you sit. This is a serious 4K contender to delight gamers, and it comes with the essential low latency that Horizon Forbidden West demands. You’ve got a pair of HDMI 2.2 ports to hook up consoles, a proper daylight-beating 3000 lumens of brightness and a low input lag of 16ms at 60Hz with its 4K resolution. That’s enough to keep gameplay smooth and responsive at 120 inches, and it will thrill pro gamers.
