About this deal

Sure, most of us aren’t half-vampires who have trained long and hard in the art of vampire slaying and carry a massive sword straight out of Hellsing or Final Fantasy. But most of us are, in one way or another, trying to prove our worth to something or someone. For some of us, it could be to ourselves. For others, it could be to external forces like parents, bosses, friends, or even society in general. F rom Olivie Blake, the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six comes Masters of Death, a story about vampires, ghosts, and death itself! All of that makes the story feel epic in scope in a way that horror seldom is. And most of what is truly horrible in this story isn’t the monsters. It’s all the endless betrayals. It feels like the foundations of Remy’s world get pulled out from under him over and over as he keeps learning that under the corruption of everything if you scrape it away there’s yet another layer of, you guessed it, rot and corruption. Nothing he thinks he knows turns out to have any bearing on any truth.

Filipino YA horror author Rin Chupeco on life and 'The Girl from the Well' ". GMA News Online . Retrieved 2019-04-03. I understand that you had to do what was necessary to restrain my brother, even if it meant delivering him serious injury,” the lord said, the words whisper-soft and low. “That fight has been settled, with you the victor. But if you wish to continue, it is I you shall be facing next. And this battle, my pet, you will not win.” The younger vampire, Naji, at least had the wisdom to remain where he was throughout the fight, though the faint smirk on his face faded when his elder brother shot a dark glance his way. Why won’t you let me kill you?” she cried out as petulantly as a child. A vessel had been severed somewhere behind her right iris, and from that eye, blood cried down, hardened, and clotted. Or maybe that’s just my personal love for him clouding my thoughts. Silver Under Nightfall is a curious and fascinating combination of science and fantasy. Conversations about experiments and vampire courts all in one scene. I became immediately swept away in this detailed, descriptive, and immersive world. To be fair, I’d also never survive, but I love reading it! It also is a fabulous combination of fantasy and mystery. Detective stories move over! Silver Under Nightfall is like a supernatural mystery. And then there’s the vampires, both the rogue vampires and the sexy vampire nobility. Which pushes the whole thing towards the paranormal which is an offshoot of horror. As I mentioned, Silver Under Nightfall is, at the heart of it, somewhat of a detective story. But even amongst a plot that keeps you guessing and a memorable cast of characters, Remy Pendergast really does stand out. Xiaodan is a beautiful charmer and Zidan is a magnetic enigma. But in my opinion, Remy is the star of the show. And that’s because he’s the most relatable character out of the trio.

And he’s tempted. Even though becoming a vampire’s familiar is against the law. Even though he’s fought vampires all his life. Even though a vampire killed his mother and he was born from her corpse. As they navigate the dangerous terrain and face new threats, Remy develops complicated feelings for the couple. With each passing day, he begins to question everything he thought he knew about vampires, including the story behind his own family legacy.

Because of The Girl From the Well and The Suffering, I already knew Rin Chupeco was a dab hand at the horror genre. Silver Under Nightfall really solidified this for me. There’s not really a mystery in the sense that we’re immediately told that rabid mutant vampires are the threat to the kingdom. But still, Chupeco still manages to send chills skittering down the reader’s spine with the use of incredibly evocative language. He was expecting the newcomer to be yet another dramatic brat. He was only partially correct. The stranger had dramatic stapled to him, but it was the kind of dramatic that attached itself, unwanted, like a very glamorous leech, and demanded attention on behalf of its owner whether it was warranted or not. Junior Library Guild: The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco". www.juniorlibraryguild.com . Retrieved 2019-05-30. Remy Pendergast is a Reaper. In this world that means vampire hunter. But Remy only hunts so-called “rogue” vampires – ones who are causing mischief in human-controlled countries like Aluria. Vampires also have fiefdoms of their own where the rules are undoubtedly different.

The man grinned, exposing long, elegant fangs, white as ivory in the dim light. Remy tensed, his mind seeking out other weapons, other alternatives. The vampire bastard knew this wasn’t a fair fight. He had the strength of thirty men, of at least five Remys. He looked capable of punching through the moon if he jumped high enough. All Remy had was a limited drug supply and a cylinder full of spent knives.

Where I started with this review was that I still wasn’t sure whether the book was horror or fantasy. It was presented to me as horror and the scientific experimentation with zombie-like monsters who roam the countryside and infect others definitely has that vibe. There’s even a Doctor Frankenstein who is entirely too proud of his work even if he doesn’t use electricity to achieve his goals. She stood in the small clearing with moonlight threading through the dark tresses of her hair, braiding it in softer shades of light. Her small, white fingers trembled as she undid the laces of her gown, deliberate in their clumsiness. There are many things we suffer through that we never deserve, and that is true whether you are dead or living. I will offer what compensation I can to her family, to the best of my ability. Seven deaths to pay for one woman’s is a generous offer. I suggest you take it.” He let go, and in the blink of an eye vanished, reappearing on the other side of the forest and calmly straightening his collar. Only then did Remy notice the curved sword at his hip, at the sheer arrogance of the man not having used it at all. From the award-winning author of The Twisted Ones comes a gripping and atmospheric retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's classic "The Fall of the House of Usher."

The Heart Forger' Continues the Complexities of 'The Bone Witch' ". FangirlNation Magazine. 2018-03-10 . Retrieved 2019-05-30. Someone is creating monsters that at first seem to be super-duper enhanced vampires. But they’re not. They’re mindless husks who regenerate at will and seem to be impossible to kill. Upon closer scientific study (this world is steampunk-ish so there’s plenty of mad science at least of the medical variety) it’s revealed that these mindless husks were never vampires – and that vampires are immune to the infection that creates them.
