But even amongst a plot that keeps you guessing and a memorable cast of characters, Remy Pendergast really does stand out. Xiaodan is a beautiful charmer and Zidan is a magnetic enigma. But in my opinion, Remy is the star of the show. And that’s because he’s the most relatable character out of the trio.

Because of The Girl From the Well and The Suffering, I already knew Rin Chupeco was a dab hand at the horror genre. Silver Under Nightfall really solidified this for me. There’s not really a mystery in the sense that we’re immediately told that rabid mutant vampires are the threat to the kingdom. But still, Chupeco still manages to send chills skittering down the reader’s spine with the use of incredibly evocative language. He was expecting the newcomer to be yet another dramatic brat. He was only partially correct. The stranger had dramatic stapled to him, but it was the kind of dramatic that attached itself, unwanted, like a very glamorous leech, and demanded attention on behalf of its owner whether it was warranted or not. Where I started with this review was that I still wasn’t sure whether the book was horror or fantasy. It was presented to me as horror and the scientific experimentation with zombie-like monsters who roam the countryside and infect others definitely has that vibe. There’s even a Doctor Frankenstein who is entirely too proud of his work even if he doesn’t use electricity to achieve his goals. She stood in the small clearing with moonlight threading through the dark tresses of her hair, braiding it in softer shades of light.
