About this deal

Testing the lens under ideal conditions, using an ultra-high resolution Canon EOS 5Ds R, most of my 70mm images were sharp at 1/6 second exposures and about half were sharp at 1/5 second with a strong taper off in keeper rate at longer exposures. While those photographing landscapes with this lens may not find the wide f/2.8 aperture mandatory (and those hiking to remote landscape destinations may not appreciate the weight that accompanies an f/2.8 lens), This is one of those great lens values that comes along and makes you re-think the amount of money you've sunk into "L" glass. PL Water-repellent, Antistatic type. Circular PL filter removes the reflection of water surface and glass windows, and increases the contrast in landscape photography. The lens foot can replace the original lens’s supplied foot, making it possible to directly attach the lens to the Arca Swiss platforms and screw knob clamps.

Size (diam. x length): 86 x 198 mm (3.4×7.8 in.) compared to 87 x 206 mm (3.4 x 8.1 in.) for the Nikon. The lens-hood adds a considerable amount especially once you mount the additional APS-C extender that makes the hood more effective on bodies with APS-C or DX sensors. Mount everything on a DSLR and you’re almost at a total length of 390mm. The lens does not change length during zooming or focusing. [0]On this lens, the Smooth AF Priority makes a modest, but noticeable difference, slowing AF down slightly. These 100% crops directly from a 36MP D800 sensor show that this lens is a tad soft wide open in the center and DX-corner. But from f4.0 on it performs on a very good level in the DX image-circle. The FX-corner shows quite some resolution even at f2.8 but is hampered by residual spherical aberration and astigmatism until you stop down to f8 where the lens performs on a very good level across the complete image-circle .

A focus limiter switch provides the full focus distance range or optionally limits the focus range to between 9.84'(3m) - ∞, for potentially faster focus acquisition.More light reaches the imaging sensor and it provides a shallower, better-subject-isolating depth of field. Looking at the Sigma 70-200 Sports vs. Canon 70-200L IS III specs comparison, we find that the Sigma lens has more aperture blades (11 vs. 8), is larger, A relatively common lens aberration is axial (longitudinal, bokeh) CA, which causes non-coinciding focal planes of the various wavelengths of light, or more simply, different colors of light are focused to different depths.

Infinity and long distance focusing are sacrificed with an extension tube in use, but some modest maximum magnification increase can be realized using extension tubes behind this lens.Wide open though, the Nikon definitely takes a lead, and at close distances, the Sigma definitely takes a hit. Of course if you want to do macro work then you should be on a tripod at f/4 or f/5.6 anyway, but I'm just stating the facts. Awesome lens, half the price of the Nikon. That's a fact. Matthew Richards is a photographer and journalist who has spent years using and reviewing all manner of photo gear. He is Digital Camera World's principal lens reviewer – and has tested more primes and zooms than most people have had hot dinners! Manual focus is also possible, as is Manual Override (MO). With this latter feature, the user is able to continue using autofocus as normal, before making any final manual adjustments using the focusing ring around the lens. This is particularly useful when capturing moving subjects, which may move slightly just prior to capture.
