About this deal

Monitor Toggle Press the mode/headphone button to toggle between microphone (green) and headphone (orange) volume controls. Long press to activate monitor mix controls (both green and orange). Another long press to return to separate microphone and headphone volume controls. In seemingly a first for an online review of the Shure mics MV7, we’ve made it past the first paragraph without mentioning its most obvious reference point. The Shure SM7B is a natural place to offer comparison; both are from one of the world’s most respected mic brand and both deliver exceptional speech performance. The key difference, however, lies in the lower-cost MV7’s ability to work directly with your computer without need for a separate mixer or audio interface. How important exactly is this? Let’s take a look in more detail in this Shure MV7 review. Hereby, Shure Incorporated declares that this product with CE Marking has been determined to be in compliance with European Union requirements.

The MV7 can be mounted to any standard mic stand or arm, and the included adapter lets you also mount it to smaller thread stands. The mount included in the podcast bundle is good enough for desk recordings, but you’ll want to invest in something better if you’re streaming or need to move the mic out of the way when talking. Performance Mic placement isn't nearly as critical either. Provided the MV7 is pointed accurately at the sound source, it performs best within one to six inches, but you can get away with three times that distance. This, and the fact that the MV7 is smaller, will appeal to YouTubers who don't want their faces obstructed by a large, close mic.The MOTIV Desktop Application offers control over microphone settings and includes the following additional features: Unfortunately, most consumer grade audio interfaces and mixers only provide about 40dB of gain, which means you'll have to invest in a Cloudlifter or preamp to provide you with enough additional boost. What exactly does “grow” mean? For starters, the MV7 has two outputs: a standard XLR mic plug plus a convenient USB connection allowing you to plug it straight into your computer without an extra audio interface. The benefit here is clear: You can record high-quality audio with just a laptop and MV7 no matter where you are. But it still works with a standard audio rig requiring an XLR cable. (Pro tip: You can also use both the USB and XLR outputs at the same time!) This is where a microphone like the Shure MV7 comes in. It’s not quite a match for the SM7B when it comes to sound quality, despite the similar appearance; however its USB connectivity makes it far easier to get started with and its sound quality is extremely good.

Just like the SM7B, it features an integrated yoke stand that can be flipped 180 degrees for mounting on a traditional mic stand or hung from a boom arm. It's quite a lump too, at 198.7mm/7.823" long, 117mm/4.606" wide and 96mm/3.78" deep, but, to be fair, it's designed to be mounted on a stand rather than handheld. The heavyweight, integrated yoke stand makes positioning it a doddle but if you're a performer it will stop you from hurling it around ala Roger Daltrey (or, ahem, Kanye West). Many great podcasts are recorded in bedrooms and living rooms across the world, and the MV7X adopts Voice Isolation Technology from its older sibling, the MV7, to ensure you too can get perfect recordings in imperfect rooms. Whether you’re a podcaster that likes to get up close and personal with the microphone, or a streamer that likes a bit more breathing space, you can select from ‘ near’ or ‘ far’ depending on your preference. Or is the MV7 little more than a cheaper, second-rate SM7B with a few additional fancy bells and whistles? Yes, it was shrewd of Shure to model the MV7's appearance on the SM7B but it’s way more capable than a lookie-likey budget mic. The SM7B has gained legendary status among producers, recording engineers and podcasters alike. Many will accept nothing else, but should they (and streamers) consider the new MV7 microphone instead? There are some differences. The SM7B has a much flatter frequency response between 50 and 200 Hz, which means that most voices will retain their desirable warm, smooth richness. Its frequency response range is also slightly broader at the top end too - 50 Hz - 20 kHz vs 50 Hz - 16 kHz for the MV7 - which makes it a better mic for recording some instruments such as guitar.
