First stage show in the United States of America. Performed in New York City at the Atlantic Theater Company [77] Každý den nějakým způsobem zraňujeme ostatní." (...) Dnes potkám lidi, kteří mě zklamou. Ale já taky někoho zklamu. Ale když tohle přijmu, budu lepším pro Svět. (...) Jsme stvořeními ztráty. Traumata, víra, že je to vše naše vina, že jsme zatracení a osamělí, přichází snadno. To pak reflektujeme a přenášíme do vztahů. (...) Umíme milovat jen způsobem, který známe. (...) Žít plně a jít kupředu je důležitější, než být šťastný. (...) Zodpovědnost za pocity a za to, jak se rozhodnu, ne za věci okolo nás, které jsou mimo moji kontrolu." Derren Brown is a mine of wisdom, humanity and kindness - everything we need to sustain and nourish ourselves. Alain de Botton

This book is so very well edited and constructed, with extra attention given to many phrases in italics to ensure we understand what we are being taught, as well as crediting those philosopher's with words he borrows for the purpose of the chapter it's in. If it momentarily appears that the author is about to go off on a tangent, you can rest assured that he'll save that subject where more appropriate for a later chapter. International Magic Presents: The Derren Brown Lecture is an 80-minute lecture DVD of close-up mentalism and subsequent discussion of various aspects of Brown's performance. Again, this product is not intended for general consumption but is directed at magicians and mentalists only.

Brown states that he uses a variety of methods to achieve his illusions including traditional magic/conjuring techniques, memory techniques, hypnosis, body language reading, cognitive psychology, cold reading, and psychological, subliminal (specifically the use of PWA; "perception without awareness"), and ideomotor suggestion. Others additionally ascribe methods to him that he denies, ranging from the pseudoscience neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to paid actors. [40]

There are some gems, though. I liked the way he gives practical help and although I'm not 100% convinced by what he recommends, I can see it helping a lot of people. It's also good that he exposes the dubious practices of some of the "think positive" campaign and how it's so easy to be convinced that we're "failing" if we don't always send positive vibes into the universe. As an undergraduate, he started working as a conjuror, performing the traditional skills of close-up magic in bars and restaurants. In 1992, he started performing stage shows at the University of Bristol under the stage name Darren V. Brown; the "V" stood for "Victor". [1] [10] Career [ edit ] Performance [ edit ]

The phrase "it's fine" appears a lot in this book, when it regards everything we can't control ie. anything but our thoughts and actions, and I've already adapted this into the road rage I have experienced, for example: I particularly appreciated and enjoyed the stand-up comedian's Louis C.K.'s telling of anger on the road. Brown's first two books were intended for magicians; they were written before his fame. He has said that he pulled them from the market when he found that non-magicians would bring them to his shows for autographs. He says he felt bad because, "...they're spending a lot of money on those things and...if they wanted to find out how I was doing the TV shows it wasn't really answering that question." [83] If you are pained by external things, it is not they that disturb you, but your own judgement of them. And it is in your power to wipe out that judgement now.8”The Events". Derrenbrown.co.uk. 2 October 2009. Archived from the original on 6 October 2009 . Retrieved 1 March 2010. Since he introduced us to his singular and inimitable brand of psychology, stagecraft and magic in 2000, Derren Brown has played Russian Roulette on live television, convinced middle-managers to commit armed robbery in the street, led the nation in a séance and exposed psychic and faith-healing charlatans. His live shows astonish audiences across the country and have captivated the West End and Broadway. In 2007, BBC News listed two of his shows ( Russian Roulette and Seance) in a list of examples of Channel 4's "legacy of controversy". [17] In 2013, he said, "Controversy has never interested me for its own sake. It's always been about doing stuff that feels dramatic." [18] Across the millennia, philosophers have thought long and hard about happiness. They have defined it in many different ways and come up with myriad strategies for living the good life. Drawing on this vast body of work, in Happy Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness - from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. He shows how many of self-help's suggested routes to happiness and success - such as positive thinking, self-belief and setting goals - can be disastrous to follow and, indeed, actually cause anxiety. This brilliant, candid and deeply entertaining book exposes the flaws in these ways of thinking, and in return poses challenging but stimulating questions about how we choose to live and the way we think about death.

He talks a about "enjoying the moment" or mindfulness and, as we all know, this is probably the best way to combat anxiety and his explanations of how the mind works are as good as you would expect from someone so skilled in the field. There are also some very good sections about how to accept the ups and downs of life - and of our own emotions - and how to steer our minds into working for us rather than against us. This is a life-changing book, especially the first part. The author so eloquently presents to you in such an empathetic way how you can consider living your life by applying a few Stoic principles such that you experience more peace with yourself and other people. I could immediately apply his words into a stressful situation in my life and felt a great relief. He wrote really well. This could be a PhD - the amount of thought he put into integrating old thoughts from modern thoughts, covering both breadth and depth. I was so happy to have found this book. Thank you, Derren Brown, for sharing your insights and wisdom with us. His treatment of death is also good and I think will bring comfort to some people - but not all. He's adamant that there is no afterlife (a belief I can't share) which I found a bit sad, but that said, the rest of his treatment of the subject is constructive. I guess he's a humanist - which is fine by me -and for anyone who doesn't believe in "something beyond" I think it will be of great help.

Public complaints that Russian Roulette was distasteful, made light of suicide, and promoted gun culture were ultimately rejected by Ofcom on the basis that the context (a post- watershed magic show) was enough and that the warnings given were sufficient. Additionally, the use of a 15-minute time delay ensured no viewer would have seen the result of any mistake. [19] The police had also warned that the show might inspire copycat acts. [17] Maybe due to the overwhelming amount of intellect and wisdom this book provides, I imagine this would be even more thoroughly enjoyed a second time round, and I do indeed feel somewhat happier with the knowledge I've taken in it from it after just one I liked how the book was structured. Many great mental models to help with lowering anxiety and becoming more of who you truly are.
