Wertheimer, Tiffany (3 March 2022). "Babyn Yar: Anger as Kyiv's Holocaust memorial is damaged". BBC News . Retrieved 30 September 2022. Thirty-three thousand Jews died in that first massacre, but the killing didn't stop there. Next from all over Ukraine came Russian prisoners-of-war in their thousands, then the gypsies, a large group of sailors, partisans, anyone who stepped out of line. The whole of the Dynamo Kyiv football team died there for their audacity in beating German sides in exhibition matches. It was written by Anatoli Kuznetsov from notes written as a 14 year-old teenager from scenes he witnessed and heard of at Babi Yar, in Kyiv, Ukraine.

When I recounted episodes of this story to different people, they all said I had to write the book. The word 'document' in the subtitle of this novel means that I have provided only actual facts and documents without the slightest literary conjecture as to how things could or must have happened. What pressures and motivations may have affected soldiers to volunteer for the Einsatzgruppen and later murder innocent civilians?

The ravine was used as an open-air rubbish dump. “The victims’ possessions would sometimes rise to the surface and people would take them for themselves,” Czerny said. But as he worked on the novel, he found himself stymied by the familiar Soviet rules of socialist realism (“what ought to have happened”), which required a stark contrast between Nazi villains and Soviet saviors. The result rendered “the truth of real life, which cried out from every line written in my child’s notebook … trite, flat, false and finally dishonest.” Kuznetsov had seen up close two regimes whose monstrous deeds and lies converged, and too many desperate or merely cruel Ukrainians doing unforgivable things. He threw out the ideological stylebook and began to write as though he had to answer for every word. In 1959, Erich Koch, who had served as Reichskommissar in Ukraine, was tried and sentenced to death by a Polish court for crimes committed in occupied Poland during World War II. He was never tried or convicted for his war crimes in occupied Ukraine. Due to ill health, Koch’s sentence was commuted to life in prison. Anatoli documents the occupation of Kiev by the Nazis, the subsequent liberation by the Red Army, and the attempt to erase all memory of the mass murders. Hopefully such a Babi Yar museum will raise public consciousness of the Holocaust by bullets, Father Desbois continued: “At Auschwitz, there is a camp with barbed wire – and people go there and remember what took place. But people don’t do the same at mass graves from mass shootings.” Read it and weep... Nothing I have read about that barbaric time has been as affecting as this gripping, disturbing book - rightly hailed a masterpiece Tony Rennell, Daily Mail On my bookshelves I have hundreds of accounts of World War II and its horrors. A few I have even written myself, so this is a subject I know well.Russians, Ukrainians, and other people, who had come to see their relatives and friends “off to the train,” were murdered.
