About this deal

Queen Victoria was married to Albert for nearly 21 years and was very much in love with him. She did much to please her husband, giving him the title ‘Prince Consort’ in 1857 and letting him take some responsibility in the running of the country. Victoria and Albert had nine children: This eventful day, 1897 has opened, and I pray God to help and protect me as He has hitherto done these sixty long eventful years! I feel sad at the new losses I have sustained, especially the last one of our beloved Liko! God will surely help me on! How well I remember this day sixty years ago when I was called from my bed by dear Mama to receive the news of my accession! The Duke and Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh), the Queen's son and daughter-in-law While attempting to prevent their father, Max Branning ( Jake Wood), from committing suicide, Lauren Branning ( Jacqueline Jossa) and Abi Branning ( Lorna Fitzgerald) fall from the roof of the pub in the same place as their half-brother, Bradley Branning ( Charlie Clements). Lauren survives the fall, while Abi later dies of her injuries in hospital. The Hereditary Princess and Hereditary Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, the Queen's granddaughter and grandson-in-law

This criticism entered the House of Commons, where Goschen answered questions about the new coinage on 23 and 28 June. The chancellor told MPs that Royal Mint officials preferred artistic designs from past times for the coinage rather than text stating their values. The public, however, did not confuse the florin and half crown, and they would not confuse the double florin and crown. The Conservative MP, Lewis Henry Isaacs, asked whether the coins could be called in and more suitable designs made. Goschen responded that public demand for the new coins had been so great a premium was being paid for the five-pound piece and that the depiction of the queen was similar to other authorised depictions of her. [41] Continued circulation [ edit ] Personal albums of the Victorian period frequently combined portraits of relatives and friends with portraits of local and national celebrities. See, for example, Louis Joseph Ghémar, Queen Victoria and Princess Beatrice, October 1862, albumen print, National Portrait Gallery, Ax9755, within an album compiled by the family of Samuel Wilberforce (1805–1873). The sculpture depicts Queen Victoria towards the end of her long life. The marble has been sensitively carved to reflect the texture of her skin and her meditative expression, as well as the soft swirls of cloth around her head and shoulders. In 1790 he met the love of his life, the famous actress Dorothea Jordan and lived with her for the next 20 years, fathering ten children. Dorothea was cruelly abandoned with a pay-off so that William was free to marry Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in 1818, 20 years his junior. Their two daughters died in infancy. The Duke of Kent Queen Victoria surpassed her grandfather King George III as the longest-reigning British monarch on 23 September 1896, an event that she marked privately at Balmoral Castle. She wrote in her journal, "People wished to make all sorts of demonstrations, which I asked them not to do until I had completed the sixty years next June." The Diamond Jubilee was therefore an opportunity to celebrate Victoria's status as the longest-reigning monarch, in addition to marking 60 years on the throne. [1] On 20 June 1897, the sixtieth anniversary of her accession, Victoria wrote in her journal: [2]

Sir Alfred Gilbert, (1854-1934) was the most brilliant and talented sculptor of his age, transforming British sculpture at the end of the 19th century. He is best known for the Shaftesbury Memorial, 'Eros' at Piccadilly Circus and the magnificent tomb to Prince Edward, Duke of Clarence, in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. His remarkable depiction of Queen Victoria towards the end of her life was sensitively carved, between 1887 and 1889, to reflect a range of textures - the monarch’s ageing skin, lace, jewels and her meditative expression. Gilbert rarely worked in marble; most of his sculptures are in bronze, making this piece even more exceptional. Mo Harris ( Laila Morse) delivers Kat Moon's ( Jessie Wallace) baby Tommy in the barrel store on 30 December. By September, The Graphic was reporting that the new coins were scarce in circulation, and there was talk that many of them had been sent to the colonies. The withdrawn sixpence carried a premium, as did the five-pound piece, and some crowns had been gilded to pass for the five-pound coin. [46] The Sheffield Independent 's London correspondent reported on 17 September that the withdrawn sixpences were passing for half a crown each, and that in addition to the quantities of coin sent to the colonies, large amounts had been absorbed by jewellers, who placed them in ornaments, and by visitors to London seeking souvenirs of the Jubilee, especially Americans. [47]Queen Victoria’s direct agency in commissioning such photographs is evidenced by bills and receipts that survive in the Royal Archives. See, for example, Windsor, Royal Archives, Bill, with receipt, issued by William Bambridge for photography and printing photographs, 31 March–25 April 1862, RA PPTO/PP/QV/PP2/60/3477. With the permission of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Princess and Prince Adolf of Schaumburg-Lippe, the Queen's granddaughter and grandson-in-law (representing the Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe) Victoria’s wedding in 1840 to Albert was very public. It was the first royal marriage ceremony to be arranged with the enjoyment of the London public in mind. She travelled to the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace in an open carriage so that everyone could see her. A white marble bust portrait (h. 96 cm) of Queen Victoria, executed by Alfred Gilbert (1854-1934) from 1887 to 1889.
