About this deal

This is one of the larger stove fans we have on review, having said that it’s hardly big at 203mm x 178mm. But with its size comes fantastic heat displacement. It can displace 420 feet of air around the room every minute!

So why do you need a stove fan? You have gone to the expense of having a wood-burning stove fitted, it looks amazing smells amazing and provides a ridiculous amount of heat for your lounge and house. What’s the issue?

If you are just burning seasoned wood on your fire, then you only need to have your chimney swept once a year.

Without a stove fan, there is a risk that all of the warmed air will stay close the the wood stove and won’t be felt in other parts of the room. This stone fireplace was once covered up by plasterwork and wallpaper. (Image credit: Marptree and Stuart Cox) A fireplace blower pulls air in from the room and forces it through a channel on the fireplace's exterior. As the air travels around the hot fireplace, it heats up, and by the time it is released into the room, the air is much warmer than the rest of the room. Because of the warm air's convective properties, the now warmer air will rise in the room, settling near the ceiling and causing the cooler air to be pushed down towards the fireplace. As well as priming your chimney, you should ensure you have a light bed of ash in your fireplace. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, but spreading a small amount of ash beneath your fire basket or grate helps to provide a layer of insulation against the cold floor underneath. Gaps may have also formed where mortar joints have been eroded over time by acidic chemicals from combustion gases. Leaks can sometimes go undetected, particularly within lofts or to adjoining houses. The airtightness of a fluecan be testedusing smoke pellets (available from DIY stores). Where possible, leaky mortar joints should be made good prior to lining the flue. But even where a flue is already lined, old steel liners eventually suffer from corrosion.

When it comes to safely removing a gas fire, it is crucial to entrust the job to professionals who are qualified and certified in their respective fields," says Calvin May, head of technical services at HETAS. "Gas work, including the disconnection of gas pipes, should always be carried out by a Gas Safe engineer." As well as considering the height of the fan for clearance, you’ll also need to consider the stove surface. The base size of stove fans can vary, and some models may not suit your stove, particularly if the stove surface is small or raised. Whatever your taste in fires, once you have a clean opening and a freshly swept flue, the next job is normally toupgrade the hearth, traditionally made from concrete set flush into the floor void. To comply with Building Regulations this will need to be raised above floor level; it’s a simple job to form a new one directly on top from in-situ concrete, or you might opt for a marble or slate hearth.

We have updated this review for the Winter of 2022, looking at what we think are currently the best stove fans on offer for 2023. Overall Best Stove Fan When shopping for a fireplace you will want to search for a unit that has the option for a blower. Even if you decide against adding one during initial installation, fireplaces that are compatible with fans provide greater flexibility in the future and allow you to add a blower in a few years if you decide you want one. Better yet find a fireplace where the blower comes standard on the unit and if you don’t want or need to use it you don’t have to, but you won’t have to pay extra for it! Fans come standard on Regency’s entire lineup of Gas Fireplace Insertsso you don’t have to make the choice to do it now or later! When it comes to cleaning your log burner, it's also best practice to clean it after every use. If you burn the right kind of wood, it will reduce the amount of smoke and pollutants, keeping the burner cleaner and avoiding build ups of soot and creosote. As well as cleaning out ash, soot and debris, you'll also need to clean the glass.

When placing the stove fan on top of your wood stove, i t needs to be as far away from the flue pipe as possible and on a level surface. Already, this may limit the amount of space you have available for a stove fan, even before taking headroom into account. Regular maintenance is also essential to keep your chimney fan operating optimally. This includes periodic cleaning of the fan blades, inspection of electrical connections, and replacement of worn-out components as needed.
