About this deal

I'm writing todays review as part of the Random Things Tour. Thank you to them and to Lucy Beaumont for sending me a copy of this book to read and review. Those nerves were exacerbated by the way women in comedy were treated. When Beaumont started out, “The misogyny was mad. When I would go on stage, a lot of the audience would go to the toilet or get a drink,” she says. “I couldn’t get gigs, they’d say ‘We’ve booked a woman this month’.” a b c d e f g Grieveson-Smith, Jess (12 April 2022). "Hullraisers' Lucy Beaumont from surprising stage fright to childbirth trauma". Huddersfield Daily Examiner. Huddersfield, England: Reach plc . Retrieved 13 April 2022. This first foray into standup in a decade has raised old demons for Beaumont, which her new career as a successful TV writer has yet to slay. “I know now,” she says, “that what put me off standup was the horrific misogyny that I suffered.” Only a decade ago, she says, promoters still didn’t want to book female comics; comperes introduced them with an apology and “you’d get on stage and the audience would instantly look embarrassed before you said anything. Or they would use you as the time to go to the toilet.”

I love the honesty of the book and even as a non parent so recognise the ‘ loving I can shop in Waitrose but then wondering if I should be in Waitrose’, the author is a self confessed snob yet cant stand other snobs, something lots of us, in a completely honest moment can at least give a nod toShe is a champion of working class actors and comedy actors, and how important it is for them to show their work online, on YouTube or blogs, and she got her own big break when she was a finalist in the 2011 So You Think You're Funny annual stand-up competition. As well as honest it is happy, sad, thoughtful, irreverent, moving, basically every emotion you can think of rolled into one joyous read Lucy’s voice is warm and relatable, and I couldn’t help hearing it in her voice as I read, and the corrections and clarifications from Jon Richardson set the tone early on. They seem like a nice couple when they’re on TV things, and that comes across here too. It led to her convincing herself “that I don’t belong here, I’m not good enough, I’m not funny”. Four series of a hit TV show later, she says, “I still have all that in my head whenever I do anything. And it’s really frustrating that men don’t. So my thing with the new tour is I just want to make it” – like Meet the Richardsons before it – “the funniest thing it can be.” Lucy Beaumont: One to watch". That’s one of Taskmaster’s joys: it’s not only kind, but also the only place on television that allows comedians to fully reveal themselves and to be celebrated for whoever they are. It rewards difference and breadth of approach, which is why series 14’s Fern Brady, diagnosed as autistic, found such powerful public and self-acceptance during her time on the show. And for Beaumont, “It’s really nice showing your personality. That you’re not just someone’s wife.” From TV's award-winning comedy mum, Lucy Beaumont, comes her hilarious debut on the trials and tribulations of motherhood. Known for her sharp, witty and surreal view on everyday life, Lucy shares the unpredictable craziness of being a mum in this brilliant and laugh-out-loud 'mumoir'. Mums everywhere will recognise the madness of it all.I have enjoyed Lucy’s comedy on TV so I bought this. Maybe I’d have enjoyed an audio version or wasn’t in comedic mood to self deliver any wit here.

Retrieved 29 December 2019.In 2022, Beaumont appeared in an episode of the revival series of The Weakest Link, hosted by Romesh Ranganathan. She was voted out in round 3. It was more amusing than funny to me, although part of that was the class angle. There is just something that annoys me about middle class people trying to distance themselves from the ludicrous ways of the snobs around them, while their own child's behaviour, reminiscent of an obnoxious princess, is no reflection on them of course. That said, one of the anecdotes I did find funny was the idea of a toddler asking her gran for a breakfast smorgasbord. UKTV's Dave Channel Sets UK Premiere Date For 'Meet The Richardsons' Christmas Special". 18 November 2020. I was excited to receive this book to read and review as I'm a fan of both Lucy and her husband. I enjoy watching the various comedy shows they are in and they never fail to make me laugh and smile. This book is no exception. As a parent myself I was able to relate to many of the thoughts and feelings contained within this book.

She made it to the final. The following year, she won the BBC New Comedy Award. When she took her debut show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014, it was shortlisted for Best Newcomer. Her jokes found joy and the surreal in the everyday, moving between silly puns and surprising double punchlines with ease. I’ll eat anything really! If there’s a good vegan option, I’ll normally have that, but there very rarely is. You can tell when someone’s cooking it if they’re vegan because they understand that you don’t just want butternut squash and that you still want something “meaty”. But fish and chips is still my favourite – Cave Street Fisheries in Hull is where I go!’

Beaumont was a contestant in the 16th series of Taskmaster, broadcast September–November 2023 and placing fifth. [38] Filmography [ edit ] Television [ edit ] Year I give Drinking Custard Diary Of A Confused Mum By Lucy Beaumont (With interruptions from Jon Richardson) a Five out of Five paw rating. She also revealed that she now considers herself both working and middle class - as demonstrated recently after buying a bottle of organic red wine, she tripped on the way out of the shop, and saved the wine before herself. Beaumont is extremely relatable and I felt like I was chatting with a much loved friend. A friend who completely understands the Jekyll and Hyde that is motherhood. Someone I can be honest and open with about how tough this parenting gig is. I don’t blame her for wanting to look after a pet bull when she saw an advert on Facebook during her pregnancy and wanted to bring him home to cuddle and have parties with his bull friends. I would be exactly the same. Hormones, it’s always the hormones that mess with your emotions. Beaumont is known for her observational comedy about her home city of Hull including the local dialect and food such as patties and chip spice. [9] Her on-stage persona delivers deadpan anecdotes and has been described as "ditzily naïve". [16]
