About this deal

When it comes to trade wood and metal paints our choice of fast drying, non-drip and high gloss paint finishes come in a range of colours and are suitable for multiple uses.

Trade paint covers in fewer coats, has much better opacity and lasts much longer than retail paint. The ceiling was fresh plaster, I normally apply a mist coat of contract matt in the same brand I’m using as a top coat, unless there’s a specified undercoat. Unfortunately, I had already bought the paint for my current job, so I ended up doing the mist coat in Tikkurila Optiva Primer. I couldn’t wait to get going with the Johnstone’s Perfect Matt. Not suitable for ceilings due to the potential for flashing with natural light (I recommend MacPherson’s Eclipse for ceilings) Anti-Reflex 2 in white and Macpherson Eclipse don’t picture frame, go patchy and I’ve touched it in without issue. The big difference the Perfect Matt is how white the paint is. I’m a big Anti-Reflex fan, but the Perfect Matt is definitely the crispest, bright white I’ve ever seen.

While Dulux and Johnstones offer plenty of choices, arch-rival Crown’s contribution to our shortlist of the best emulsion paints is about value. For sheer diversity, it’s hard to look beyond Dulux’s range of emulsion paints. Although we’re reviewing the five-litre Pure Brilliant White Matt emulsion, it’s possible to get seven other finishes, from satin and silk to gloss and eggshell. You can buy 30ml tester pots and various tin sizes containing anything from 0.75 litres to five litres. As briefly touched upon above, buying white emulsion isn’t as straightforward as choosing any old paint and slapping it on your walls and ceilings. Here are some things to consider before buying your paint: Albany Supercover offers exceptional quality and coverage. Despite a few minor issues, it’s a worthwhile choice, especially for transformations involving light shades over dark colours. It was my go-to before Covaplus, and it certainly holds a premium standard in my book. One thing I would say is anyone can get a flawless finish with Johnstone’s perfect matt. If price doesn’t come into it and you’re not bothered about other products being better value for money, then perfect matt may be the product for you. It’s also worth mentioning that I’ve only given you a review in white, but this product can actually be tinted into any colour from Johnstone’s vast range. Value is the only thing counting against Johnstone’s entry, which has the widest choice of colours and offers generous coverage. However, costing almost twice as much per litre as Dulux’s offering, it’s simply too expensive.

Finding the best white emulsion paint can help you totally transform your living space and in some cases even increase the value of your property. They offer a timeless, elegant look and are great for making your rooms look bigger as well as lighter. Even the best emulsion paint will look stippled or uneven if it’s not applied correctly. So we recently published a guide to the best rollers for emulsion paint. Similarly, our guide to the UK’s best paintbrushes will help you make light work of edges, corners and strips around windows or door frames where a roller is too large to reach. Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt is a trustworthy white emulsion paint for walls that has consistently impressed me with its excellent quality and affordability. It delivers the same high standard as Tikkurila’s vinyl matt, yet comes at half the price. The impressive coverage, with two coats generally sufficing no matter the original shade, makes this a practical choice for any decorating job.Perfect Matt is Johnstone’s premium emulsion, designed to rival the designer brands. Available in white, or just about any colour from the vast range at Johnstone’s Trade. This emulsion is available online and used on interior walls and ceilings. Touch dry in around 2 hours, recoat time is approximately 4 hours, depending on conditions. This is my Johnstone’s Perfect Matt review. I hope you find it useful. On the other hand, if I’m painting over lighter colours, I would go with Covaplus because it’s a dream to apply. White Emulsion: Trade or Retail? For reasons of hygiene and safety, personal grooming products, cosmetics or items of intimate clothing cannot be returned. Emulsion paint comes in various colours, usually pale or pastel. Our shortlisted Johnstone’s paint comes in 35 hues, while Dulux offers 30 shades other than the Pure Brilliant White tested here. So, to ensure our review is fair, we’ve chosen the same shade of paint for all three shortlisted products.

Supercover delivers remarkable coverage, capable of completely transforming dark hues with just two coats. I’ve personally used it to cover dark red and blue walls with ‘Swansong,’ an off-white shade, and the results were phenomenal. Opacity is truly top-notch, which contributes to its powerful coverage capabilities. Second coat applied, very good, smooth and silky too apply, and it does dry to very flat matt finish. this paint really is a joy to use. My top tip: best results are achieved with proper preparation and the use of a quality roller – I personally recommend the Hamilton microfibre 12-15”. I suppose it comes down to budget. If budget is not an issue and you want the best paint money can buy, then Johnstone’s Perfect Matt is the ideal product. Can be temperamental on extra porous surfaces, such as unsealed coving and filler, where flaking can occur. However, a primer can easily remedy this. With its high opacity, it bleaches out beautifully when drying, injecting a fresh brightness to the walls which is ideal if you’re painting rooms that get minimal natural light. Dulux also warns that the presence of ‘ methyl-2H-isothiazol’ may cause allergic reactions in some users. Summary Due to the fact that it’s mould resistant (I believe it contains a fungicide that inhibits the growth of mould), I would personally use this if your kitchen or bathroom struggles to extract moisture. I actually used this paint in my mother’s kitchen as she’s frequently boiling food on the hob and has a terrible extractor fan and it still looks great 3 years on.
