About this deal

p>This is my Burmese Cat, Willow, sunning herself on the log pile in the kitchen garden:

Only last week I went to a restaurant where the mayonnaise had a 'may contain traces of gluten' warning on it, must to my surprise. What the label advises: Store at room temperature, away from heat and direct sunlight (Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

HP Brown Sauce does contain gluten, however the Tesco and Asda's 'cheap' brown sauces are completely safe. What the label advises: After opening, keep refrigerated and use within one month (Maille Dijon Original Mustard) And a bottle of wine to go with brown sauce? How about Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial from the Ribero del Duero? I’m sure Ignacio Peyró wouldn’t approve. Dr Schenker says: 'Sometimes people keep ketchup in the fridge, simply because they prefer a chilled taste, but otherwise it doesn't need to be refrigerated.' Brown sauceWhat the experts say: Made with wine, this French mustard also contains the preservatives potassium metabisulphite and citric acid. What the experts say: HP Sauce contains preservative ingredients including both malt vinegar and spirit vinegar, so it's fine to keep in the cupboard, along with your ketchup. Additional Branston products include mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, piccalilli, brown sauce, salad cream, and baked beans. [12] However, many of the supermarket own brand Yeast Extracts are gluten free and safe for people with coeliac disease to eat. Speaking of soaking up the leftovers, what about some bread? You could enjoy a white bread bacon and sausage sandwich — the plainness of the bread working wonders at stopping the meats from being overpowering. Particularly useful if you’ve not quite woken up yet. Add some butter and experience the joy of it melting at the touch of the hot parts of your meal. Delightful.

I personally think gluten free soy sauce tastes the same, but Asian food connoisseurs might disagree - you'll have to let me know if you think otherwise! He’s right in one thing, the contemplation of Brown Sauce certainly enlivens the heart of this Briton. Hence without further ado, here’s my ode to Brown Sauce, with a few diversions along the way. Brown Sauce HP Dates add two things, body and sweetness. Dates are full of sugar but also have deep flavour. In this recipe they are minced and add body giving the brown sauce a great sauce texture.

What the experts say: Storing olive oil in the fridge will solidify the triglycerides and monounsaturated fatty acids, so keep it in a cupboard instead.

Not only does it contain vinegar, but tomatoes are naturally acidic, and this helps to preserve the product in ambient (room temperature) conditions. It can be easy to assume that everything in that aisle is safe to eat, but some of it may be in there because it's dairy or egg free, but still contains gluten. It's rare, but it happens.Brown sauce is a condiment and preserved with vinegar. I like to use a flavourful vinegar in my brown sauce like an inexpensive red wine vinegar but I suspect commercial varieties of brown sauce use regular distilled white vinegar What the experts say: Dr Schenker says: 'There's no need to refrigerate soy sauce, because anything with such a high salt content is highly preserved.' This acts as a preservative, so there's no need to keep it in the fridge, leaving more space for condiments that need chilling.

Although the suggestion is to keep it refrigerated, it can be safely kept in a cupboard in ambient conditions. My favourite brown sauce? Mmm, both HP and Daddies delight but Daddies is fractionally less sweet, so edges it for me. As discussed above, Marmite is unfortunately not gluten free and is labelled as such, but some of the supermarket yeast extracts are, which are basically the same thing! Are sauces which contain barley gluten free? What the experts say:Like Dijon mustard, this can be kept in the cupboard, thanks to preservatives including vinegar and lactic acid.
