About this deal

The level of folate and Hcy status is critical in the early stages of human reproduction. Investigation of the role of Hcy metabolism in patients with unexplained female sterility or secondary sterility due to recurrent pregnancy loss shows a positive association. Women and men with fertility problems may have low folate availability, which is often related to the MTHFR enzyme polymorphism. Preconceptional folate supplementation has been linked to beneficial reproductive outcomes in both natural pregnancies and those after ART treatment. One of the advances that changed the way we look at vitamins was the discovery that too little folate is linked to birth defects of the spine (spina bifida) and brain (anencephaly). Fifty years ago, no one knew what caused these birth defects, which occur when the early development of tissues that eventually become the spinal cord, the tissues surrounding it, or the brain goes awry. More than 30 years ago, British researchers found that mothers of children with spina bifida had low vitamin levels. [1] Eventually, two large trials in which women were randomly assigned to take folic acid or a placebo showed that getting too little folate increased a woman’s chances of having a baby with spina bifida or anencephaly and that getting enough folate could greatly reduce the incidence of these birth defects. [2,3]

Taking too much folate from supplements or fortified foods can hide a vitamin B12 deficiency. Being deficient in vitamin B12 can lead to permanent brain and nerve damage. Taking too much folic acid may also increase the risk of some cancers, although more research is needed. If you don’t like swallowing big pills, NOW’s Folic Acid supplement is for you. It’s less than 1 centimeter in size making it easy to take, and it is an inexpensive folate option. One tablet has 800 mcg of folic acid, which is twice the RDA but less than the upper limit of 1,000 mcg/day. How much folic acid you take and how long you take it for depends on why you need it. Dose before and during early pregnancyVitamin B12 and folate are both important for the formation of your red blood cells and DNA. A deficiency in either vitamin can lead to fatigue, weakness and anemia. Unlike folate, B12 isn’t found in plants. B12 is mainly found in meat, eggs and dairy products. Vegetarians and vegans are at a high risk of B12 deficiency. Severe vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to complications such as depression, paranoia, delusions, memory loss, incontinence and loss of taste and smell. What is MTHFR polymorphism?

We appreciate that NOW conducts comprehensive in-house testing on the safety, purity, and quality of their supplements, and that this supplement fits a variety of dietary needs. It is vegan, free of common food allergens, kosher, halal, and non-GMO. However, it is not a good fit for those who can’t metabolize folic acid. When cultured in standard complete RPMI medium, the proportion of cells in the S-phase of the cell cycle was 11.7%. After 10 days of cell culturing in the folate-deficient medium, the proportion of cells in the S-phase of the cell cycle increased to 21.1% ( Figure 2B). This indicates that folate deficiency causes an arrest in the S-phase ( p≤ 0.0001). Accumulation of cells in the S-phase was accompanied with a decrease in the G0/G1 phase (74.0% versus 63.2%; p≤ 0.001) and a slight, but still significant increase in the G2 phase (14.3% versus 15.7%; p≤ 0.05) ( Figure 2B). Prolonged exposure to high Hcy, hyperhomocysteinemia (HCys), can damage the blood vessels, contributing to blood clots, and can lead to the onset of cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis, stroke, and inflammatory syndromes as well as neuronal pathologies. Because healthy blood vessels and folate levels are essential for fertility and pregnancy, high Hcy can make it difficult to conceive and maintain a pregnancy. 25 Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation (HOPE) 2 Investigators. Homocysteine lowering with folic acid and B vitamins in vascular disease. New England Journal of Medicine. 2006 Apr 13;354(15):1567-77. Anaemia is the general term for having either fewer red blood cells than normal or having an abnormally low amount of haemoglobin in each red blood cell. Symptoms of vitamin B12 or folate deficiencyA 2014 published study clearly showed that 86% of FA in the hepatic portal vein is unmetabolized, while almost all the natural folate was converted correctly. 19, 20 Detectable levels of UMFA occur temporarily in plasma after the consumption of >200 μg FA, with concentrations increasing in parallel to that of total FA after supplementation. UMFA has been detected in cord and infant blood, a source of concern due to potential adverse effects on health, as I will further describe. 18, 21
