About this deal

If This Is England has been about anything, ultimately it’s been about belonging; to family, to friends, to lovers and, if all else fails, to country. Combo’s youthful, rage-fuelled identity crisis – which surely prompted his far-right flirtations – has culminated in him being denied any sort of second chance. And cruelly, he departs at the hands of a combination of misplaced family loyalty and even more absurd identity politics (can we assume that the two thugs who drag him away are betrayed former NF henchmen?) The climax of his arc fittingly takes place in some deserted, post-industrial hellhole and represents not one but several broken-down, dead-end ideologies and value systems. Bleak. ‘I don’t really want a hug, thanks’ Timestamp: 0:12 | Scene: Shaun rides his bike, cleans the car, rides his bike some more, buys a slingshot and hits stuff with it, eats sweets in a boat, rides his bike even more and goes to the beach (Instrumental).

Shaun’s bored in his college lecture. But little does he know that he’s sitting next to salvation from the post-Smell blues in the shape of Juliette, a slightly posh Lady Miss Kier lookalike on his course. Shaun’s gradual retreat to supporting character has been shrewdly managed by Shane Meadows – one of the delights of an ensemble piece is that over time, redemptions can be achieved and emphasis can shift. ‘It wasn’t even about the colour of your skin. I was just jealous’ Planning for the montage started in January, with Evans and his team editing for 10 days to weave the band's performance with action. The gang deface walls, intimidate local children and spray racist slogans on Asian shopkeeper Mr Sandhu's walls, while Shaun, previously banned from the shop, launches a bigoted verbal assault on Sandhu with demands for alcohol and cigarettes. Combo viciously threatens Sandhu with a machete and the gang steal goods for a birthday party under Combo's instructions.

Often up against deadlines, producers and editors would physically cut tape together, their creativity limited by a handful of camera angles and whatever music library their employers had built up. You’re a deee-lite Shaun… Poppy Corby-Tuech as Charlotte and Thomas Turgoose as Shaun. Photograph: Dean Rogers/Channel 4 Notes & queries Gorman, Rachel (4 August 2018). The song was Lose Your Head, which references a mirror in the first verse and we wanted to have that reflective element. We built a reflective stage, with reflective flooring and then with the effects were a lot of mirrored shots in transition between the match footage and the band's performance." So how have we felt about Smell (not that nice in the end), Harrison (what on earth was he wearing to that wedding? He looked like an extra from an Adam and The Ants video) Flip and Higgy (comic relief but not to everyone’s taste) and Jennifer (just why exactly, was she still around?) A mixed bag but everyone can’t have their moment in the sun, we suppose. When the music, the concept, and the pictures all chime together perfectly, that's when you hit the motherlode," Woodward said.
