While in college, Deloris experiences a sexual relationship with another female, causing her to question her sexuality. She also steals her roommates letters from her boyfriend and longs for the boyfriend to be her boyfriend. A guy her roommate is sleeping with ends up assaulting Deloris at a part. Afterwards, Deloris freaks out and leaves town. She attempts suicide by drowning in a place where whales have mysteriously began beaching themselves, but her mother's friend, whom she had called and spoken oddly to before she went into the ocean, sent help. For the next seven years her mother's friend pays for Deloris to live at a mental health facility. Death, in many forms, frequently occurs in the novel. What is the impact of death on Dolores and is she ever able to move beyond the initial tragedy of her baby brother's death? The structure of She's Come Undone keeps the reader engaged throughout, as each chapter reveals new aspects of Dolores’ life. The Buchbinders: The couple that hires Dolores to work in their store after the death of her grandmother. Dolores had a crappy life. Her father who she loved walks out on Dolores and her mother. Mom has to work for the first time in her life and Dolores becomes a latchkey kid. She took solace in eating after she was horribly raped by a neighbor. She ate until she got really big. She ate to fill the hole inside of herself and to take away the pain. It didn't work. It wasn't so bad until her mother died, and it really went downhill.I hated the character (unbelievably wimpy), the story (the ridiculous situations and absurd outcomes), and the plot (which meandered and was like walking with a 2 year old - you had to stop and fully investigate anything shiny before being allowed to move on). I think... the secret is to just settle for the shape of your life takes...Instead of you know, always waiting and wishing for what might make you happy.”

I also have to admit to having personal knowledge of the author - which in no way colors my opinion of this book. Mr. Lamb was a writing teacher at my high school in CT and actually helped me quite a bit in writing my college application essays. I got in to every school I applied for - even my reach school - and I am positive that the essay I wrote was the biggest tipping point. My essay was really good and it was wholly because of Mr. Lamb and his suggestions, pointers and all around encouragement. As a person, Mr. Lamb is wonderful and I will always remember him with high praise. By now, Dolores is in her late 30s and is depressed by the idea that she will never be a mother. Thayer, now her husband, takes her on a whale watching vacation to help her feel better. While on the boat, Dolores muses about her past and future. Dolores decides that her life, as it is now, is wonderful and is enough. The novel ends with her being the only one to see a whale breach the ocean, symbolizing her newfound peace.

I decided to read it because it kept featuring on lists of peoples favourite books, so I thought it would be a good story, alas, I was wrong! Hard to read: For the same reasons that the book of Job is not your favorite book of the bible (If the book of Job is your favorite, either you need psychological counseling, or have evolved to a remarkably advanced spiritual state. Either way, you probably won’t get much from this review). The tribulations just keep coming. Guilt about parents divorcing? Daddy abandonment issues? That’s just the baseline. Let’s pile on a little molestation, rape, 150 or so excess pounds, several years in a psychiatric facility, peer rejection and gratuitous cruelty, marriage to a philandering narcissist, abortion, and the death of almost everyone dear to you. You can almost hear Satan betting with that dear old-Testament God. Dolores’s failure to conceive is almost a relief – at least we’re spared the prospect of a child-immolation scene. I’ll give you what I learned from all this,” he said. “Accept what people offer. Drink their milkshakes. Take their love.” Dante seemed merely a pawn, convenient to the author for whatever drama he wanted to introduce to Dolores, but there was no consistency in him throughout the book.

Both The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars' 21st episode of the fourth season is called She's Come Undone.Dolores accidentally arrives at college a week early, but the creepy lesbian janitor (not because lesbians or janitors are creepy, but because this particular creepy person is also a lesbian and a janitor)—a.k.a. Dottie—befriends her and lets her stay. When Kippy arrives, she instantly hates Dolores for being fat. Kippy soon upgrades her boyfriend from Dante the long-distance dishrag to Eric the hypersexual drug-abusing frat bro. Dolores steals Dante's letters, including his nudie pics, and keeps them, slowly falling in love with this boy she's never met. Guy from Benson, NcFolks, the sax flute and clarinet have SIMILAR fingerings. If you can play one then learning the others is pretty easy. The blowing techniques are pretty different, especially on the flute because you have no resistance for your air stream. I loved the way Dolores' journey of transformation was depicted in She's Come Undone; it was both inspiring and heartbreaking. She experiences the worst that life can throw at her, dealing with obesity, insanity, close friends dying from AIDS, adultry, but fills her with such life and generosity of spirit that at no point does it come across as heavy handed or mawkish. Lamb never plays for the easy tears or attempts to pull on your heart strings so as a reader you never feel manipulated.

What I didn't love: when she left before completing treatment at the mental health facility. I worried about this because I don't want people thinking it's okay to leave and not complete treatment. I DO like that you continued to let her character mess up, because that showed she made decisions that only someone who hadn't completed treatment would make. Still, I hope people know that completing treatment is best and not to try to "fix yourself" without the help of others. So my first foray into the work of Wally Lamb was a huge success. Next up is I Know This Much Is True that I am reading with a Goodreads friend – can’t wait to dig in!Linda's performance was not that of a professional reader. Her voice is pleasant. But her reading was awful. Periods and commas where used in exactly the same way, and in many cases are added to the reading in inappropriate places (by Linda, not by the author). It was very distracting. I almost stopped reading because of it. Then the story grabbed me and stopping was not an option. Linda has the voice, she needs training and practice. Numerous jazz and other musicians have recorded "Undun". These include Phish, Hennie Bekker, [10] Steve Cole, [11] The Phil Dwyer Septet, [12] Kurt Elling, [13] Ranee Lee, [14] Sophie Milman, [15] Hugo Montenegro, [16] and Alexander Zonjic. [17] Dave Marsh; John Swenson (12 October 1983). The new Rolling stone record guide. Random House/Rolling Stone Press. p. 208. ISBN 978-0-394-72107-1. Nearly 200 titles into my audiobook habit, I'm still trying to figure out what makes for a good listen vs. a traditional read, especially within my favorite genres. I've grown somewhat wary of audio editions of literary novels -- they are almost always character-driven and light on plot, and therefore difficult in some cases to follow in audio. But it's still my favorite style of fiction, so I keep trying.
