About this deal

Among the array of Rangers legends, there is a definite place in Ibrox history for former Gers captain Barry Ferguson. The midfielder skippered the ship from 2000 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2009. He also lifted a huge 16 major titles through the midfielder’s spells in Glasgow.

RANGERS Football Club will celebrate becoming the first major European club to reach their 150th anniversary by hosting a galaxy of superstars for a Weekend of Legends, presented by Unibet, in March 2022. Commenting on the announcement, Luís Figo said: “I have many fond memories of Glasgow thanks to winning the UEFA Champions League there in 2002 and the Weekend of Legends at Ibrox is set to be another memorable occasion. It was a great day for the fans, charity game, and an amazing turnout. I really enjoyed it. It meant a lot to play in front of the fans again because to be totally honest I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye when I left. There would have been several thousands in the stands who were not even born when those on the park were in their pomp at Ibrox. This was still a day for supporters young and old to enjoy, however, as some of the greats of yesteryear pulled on their boots once again. The term ‘legend’ is often overused in the game today and that was perhaps the case, with all due respect, for some of those in both sides but the Rangers team – skippered by a true great in Barry Ferguson – still had multiple medals on their respective records. On Sunday March 26, a star-studded Rangers Legends squad will play a World Legends squad full of global talent at Ibrox stadium at 2pm. Luís, Giovanni and Roy will star alongside a World Legends squad featuring Roberto Carlos, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Pires and a Rangers Legends team featuring former heroes such as Paul Gascoigne, Kris Boyd, Michael Mols, Saša Papac and Nikica Jelavić. No sooner in the contest it was all-square at three-a-piece. Defoe this time linked up with Kris Boyd who appeared as a half-time substitute and, after finding himself in the area, he saw his initial strike kept out well before smashing in the rebound from the angle as the Ibrox faithful saw a sixth goal on the day.

But Rest of the World captain Luis Figo rallied his team for the second period and former Spain international Carlos Marchena grabbed the equaliser. Some of those on show still looked in decent shape. Defoe and Van Persie, for example, were sharp and bright and both took their goals with the quality that they were famed for during their careers. Rangers even enjoyed their only European success so far during Greig’s spell as their captain. Their six-time Scottish Cup winner lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971/72. He was also regularly a forceful presence and a true leader of men to see the Gers win three trebles.Duncan Ferguson stuns Sheffield Wednesday for first Forest Green Rovers win as he vows they CAN beat the drop His 15 years at Ibrox further returned a staggering 20 major honours with 10 top-flight titles. McCoist helped to make Rangers the all-conquering force in Scotland from the mid-1980s to the late-1990s. His haul of winners’ medals featured nine League Cups and a Scottish Cup.

It is one thing hearing the stories. It is another to see the players in action, though, and the returning heroes and an array of big names from the English and European game were given a rousing welcome. Rangers then opened the scoring just short of the quarter of an hour mark. Alan Hutton played a delightful cross into the path of Jermain Defoe and, in typical fashion, he was ice cold in front of goal as he took the ball out of the air with his left foot before chipping the ball over David James from close range to put the Gers ahead. Davie Cooper was an immensely elegant winger who thrilled Rangers supporters for 12 years with his creativity. The forward even dazzled his opponents as Dutch hero Ruud Gullit named Cooper in his ‘Perfect XI’ in 2007. They had met as Rangers and Feyenoord played a friendly. Jermaine Defoe in particular has lost none of his striker’s instinct, albeit he’s only recently retired, as he scored a double and Kris Boyd was also on the scoresheet for a team of Rangers Legends. RANGERS LEGENDS: Waterreus, Papac, Alves, Amoruso, Hutton, Ferguson, Mendes, McCann, De Boer, Defoe, MillerThe away side equalised through the Dutchman as Stewart Downing played a left-footed delivery from the right channel and the former Manchester United man glanced his header beyond Waterreus to level up proceedings at Ibrox. Gough helped Rangers win each of their nine-in-a-row league titles, alongside three Scottish Cups and six League Cups. While the Scottish Football Writers’ Association even named him as its Player of the Year in 1988/89. A Gers player had not won the SFWA title since 1977/78.
