Spoilers ahead! This episode skillfully interweaves 4 mysteries: 1) German spy lands from submarine -- who and how? 2) items looted from blitzed houses -- who and where is loot hidden? 3) man found shot on beach -- suicide or murder? 4) obnoxious rich American has mysterious British aide -- political games afoot?

Lucy and Harry (Luke de Woolfson) inherited their farm after the death of their father and are finding it difficult to keep afloat. Harry is bitter about his lot, which has landed him in trouble.Happily, Emily found warmer conditions for her latest job. "I'm working on an art house film called My Summer of Love. It's my first feature and I am playing one of two girls who befriend each other. It's a beautiful film." It was nice to get out of uniform and into civvies when Sam goes on a date with Andrew. She wears quite wholesome, sky blue dresses, and nothing too racy. In general, I think the clothes of Foyle's War predict the 1980s - shoulder pads and sculpted hair - women with power and serious jobs." After leaving drama school, 20-year-old Emily worked in the theatre, winning an Evening Standard best newcomer award for her role in the play The Royal Family. Hailed by critics, she nevertheless saw the less glamorous side of acting when she appeared as Isolde in Boudica.

The central story in this episode - the bombed school - is based on a true story. By mid October London was in the full grip of the Blitz. There are countless stories of Londoners' heroic efforts to carry on regardless of the bombs. In bombed streets, for example, postmen could still be seen conscientiously trying to deliver the mail at one heap of ruins after another. Large stores, such as John Lewis, also defied the bombs and stayed open.

Lucy is a real trouper, she wants and needs to see the best in everything, and she knows she will crumble under pressure unless she is positive. She wants the simple life and needs to feel happy and secure in the life that she has with her brother, Harry. But it's an uphill struggle."

Foyle's War is set in 1940 and my first TV was in 1947 so I know a little bit about it. Professor Phillips is a man who is a bit entrenched in the past but there's no harm in him. He's a kind man, who thinks favourably about the people who come under his tuition.a b "ITV may revive second world war drama Foyle's War". The Guardian. 9 April 2008. Archived from the original on 6 August 2017 . Retrieved 16 May 2017. Foyle is the product, I suppose, of Anthony's original scripts and whatever I bring to them by adding, rearranging or taking out - both of us concluding perhaps, that less is more. I sometimes do research myself too, into an aspect directly associated with a particular episode if I'm unclear about something." They are an enigmatic pair. The funk hole brings together the strangest mix of people in one place. There is a sense of shame about all of them and Jane is a rich girl just interested in getting on with her life. But she's mysterious and has a terrible secret." Philip Ziegler in his book, London at War, describes how civil administration almost ceased to exist. The most notorious example was West Ham, where "hideous mistakes were made". The episode is filled with tension as Foyle and Sam face obstacles at every turn. They are met with stonewalling, deflecting and outright hostility as they try to piece together what happened to the ship and who was responsible for its sinking. Along the way, they both display their trademark professionalism and perseverance, as they navigate through the complex and dangerous world of wartime investigations.

Foyle's War features the crème of British actors, which is one of Michael's favourite elements of filming. I think the audience are soon ahead of Foyle figuring that Hunter helped invent the gearbox and was cheated by Paige. Horowitz tries to widen the field of suspects such as a passing German spy. It's very difficult to put yourself in their shoes as an actor. I try and read as much as I can. There are a lot of great books, giving first-hand experience of being a fighter pilot at that time. It's really invaluable and gives you a good insight. I've recently read First Light by Geoffrey Wellum. He joined the RAF at 17 and it charts his time during the war. It's a fantastic book." Christopher Foyle is a steadfast, serious man - a grammar school boy who has risen through the ranks of the police force to become a respected detective chief superintendent. Although he had doubts at first about the value of his work solving domestic crime, he has come to realise that it is a much-needed part of the war effort. Since the death of his wife, Foyle has become somewhat solitary and his son, Andrew, is the most important thing in his life. Foyle enjoys fly-fishing, good malt whiskey and knows the south coast intimately. To play Andrew, Julian boarded a real Spitfire - but sadly for him, he wasn't able to go up in the air. The answers seem to lie buried deep in the past, in a supposedly more innocent age, amidst Oxford's dreaming spires. They involve a close friendship, a terrible betrayal and a strange cone-shaped piece of metal. In his attempt to bring a surprising murderer to justice, Foyle enters increasingly murky waters and must rely on the integrity of a German spy. As Foyle begins his investigation, he is presented with several suspects. Among them are members of a nearby Italian prisoner of war camp, who are working on a local farm owned by Henry Beaumont. Foyle also speaks to the captain of the ship, Captain Rampton, before discovering that he was not at the helm of the vessel at the time of the sinking. Our new series is set in 1940 with Foyle, Sam and Milner investigating seemingly minor crimes in and around Hastings while an epic drama is unfolding on the world stage. But the cases soon lead them down dark and dangerous paths and Foyle finds his quest for morality tested to the limit."
