On the inside of the shoe, you will find a 100 per cent polyester lining. Padding in the shoe is kept to a minimum to give the best fit and reduce the chance of hot spots. The upper part of the opening has the most welcomed amount of padding that extends from the area at the top of the tongue and around the heel. At the top of the deep heel cup is a series of silicon dots to grip onto your foot to stop any heel lift. A simple twist of the dial allows for precise adjustment and the tough slipstream plastic guides keep the Dial lace smooth running, allowing an even application of pressure across the foot. For these versatile shoes we developed a specific outsole, the X4: a carefully considered combination of stiffness and comfort, to turn pedals effectively on mixed surfaces; blending nylon - with targeted stiffness - and a rubber tread for effective grip and durability.

With an emphasis on comfort the Terra Atlas is designed to be wider and more flexible than a traditional cycling shoe. Think more of a hiking trainer feel than the unyielding, close-fitting cycling shoe. To further ensure that you will find your fit, Fizik has a comprehensively huge range of sizes from 36 to 48 with half sizes offered between 37 and 46. Performance The first thing I noticed with the fitment was a pronounced ridge that is on the outer edge within the mid-foot area. While not uncommon for Fizik, there is no noticeable arch support and the insole is very basic with little padding and no profiling.

The Atlas offers long-lasting comfort and a more generous fit than previous models, as well as good ventilation, without sacrificing protection - this is ensured by the toe area reinforced by means of TPU overlay. In terms of retention, the Terra Atlas forgoes the combination of a Boa dial and Velcro strap, as seen on the Terra X5, and instead has a single Boa dial. The insole measurement is correct as per the chart. The 44 in this brand and model will be very close to the stated 283.5mm. Smooth pedalling efficiency comes via Fizik’s redesigned X5 Outsole. This achieves a 5 out of 10 on their stiffness rating, giving excellent power transfer but with enough flex to take out some of the buzz from rougher roads and trails. It also allows for comfort off the bike too. This creates extra room in the shoe, Fizik says, but it’s not roomy enough to be considered a wide fit. On the whole, the Terra Atlas gravel shoes were really great in many ways. They still have their limitations in certain areas, but as an entry level shoe that was always going to be the case - even the majority of top-end shoes don’t manage to hit everything off perfectly.
