About this deal

For these scenarios, there’s no more perfect ‘Run and Gun’ setup in terms of knowing my image quality will be spot-on and also knowing the GoPro app has the efficiency behind it to get my video files in full resolution off the camera (with mic-audio on it already) and into mobile editing workflow. Sure, the entire Media Mod may be a mixed bag, but the parts I need specifically actually fit my specific needs. The parts that mostly underperform, I wouldn’t have used much anyway. Another awesome feature is the Horizon Levelling mode (borrowed from the GoPro MAX) which makes for super steady footage. Monitor: This allows you to see what your GoPro is seeing in real-time, but with camera info overlaid atop it (so menus and such). This is a max of 1440p for 4:3 content, and 1080p for 16:9 content. Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Obviously the easiest fix would be to enable wind reduction on the GoPro audio but I'm really trying to avoid this where possible. Obviously the advantage of the Hero 9 or 10 though is already having the inbuilt, front facing screen, so no need for the LCD Mod on that one.

Once you’ve got your microphone plugged in, you’ll want to ensure the microphone type is selected correctly within the GoPro settings. These are located by swiping down from the top, then go into Preference > Input/Output and choosing ‘Audio Input’. It’s here that you’ll see these options: In my case, the Rode Wireless Go is basically a wireless lav system. For what I do (sports stuff), this is the best possible setup because I need something wind-proof (and this mic works well while riding along at 20MPH/30KPH), but also that I can place off to the side and still get audio even when I’m not right in front of the camera. But you do you, the whole point of the Media Mod design is that you can use any mic you want. For example, the GoPro Light Mod being one ( full standalone review on that here), but also secondary microphones or anything else with a cold-shoe mount design (which is a lot of stuff). All the microphones given in the above list are highly rated products. You can choose any one of them based on your own taste and preferences.

GoPro have been producing epic action cameras for a while now and to some extent all will be fine for vlogging – however in the most recent version they have jumped up heaps in terms of quality and features, so lets run through the last 4 GoPro models in terms of their vlog limitations and advantages. In my case, I used three different microphones to test with. I suppose technically four depending on how you classify the Rode Wireless Go (since it also has a mic in it). To start, I went ahead and plugged the Rode into the 3.5mm port, and then I attached it to the side cold-shoe mount. With the release of the GoPro Hero 9 also came the new Max Lens Mod – which is an epic tool for vloggers. When it comes to using a GoPro for vlogging the biggest new feature was the much anticipated front facing screen. This makes vlogging with the GoPro Hero 9 super easy as you can now frame your shots on the go – whether that’s talking to camera pieces or simply taking selfies! So if you’re looking at the Hero 8 or Hero 9 as your GoPro for vlogging and are prepared to make some additional investment to bump up the audio quality the Media Mod + external mic combo is the way to go. Except... I am now asking questions about the wind noise and how to minimise it. Previously I had been running the GoPro Hero 7, on a chest mounted gimbal with small adhesive dead cats covering the microphones. I had disabled wind reduction to avoid the muffled sounding audio and that was working great. The first GoPro to introduce Hypersmooth stabilisation, this is the GoPro that really upped the game and where a GoPro vlog setup really came into consideration. With the release of the Hero 8 it has became apparent that as a company they’ve seen the potential market in using a GoPro for vlogging.

For those new to travel vlogging (and presumably video editing) the 360 stuff can be confusing to work your head around editing wise, so you’d be better off with the standard Hero 9. Once you unplug the Media Mod, the normal preset settings return to whatever you had them set prior to plugging in the media mod. So you can see that here: One of the new advantages of this is the MAX Media Mod – which allows you to have a 155 degree field of vision, similar to that of the MAX, which is perfect for talking to camera pieces and vlogging. I suspect the reason for the vast majority of people buying the Media Mod is for the 3.5mm mic port. Or at least the internet would say so (and I’d believe them). However, we’ll start with the onboard shotgun mic. But we’ll be brief, because…umm…it’s not awesome. Even though the fact the Media Mod had its own set of inbuilt mics, the thing that a lot of vloggers focused in on was that the Media Mod allowed a clean and contained solution for attaching external microphones – which opened up a whole range of options. In my case I used it both with the Light Mod, but also some microphones as I’ll show below in the next section.
