Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn is a new sequel of the great Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword game. A New Dawn serves as a new expansion, adding a huge and balanced new technology tree, putting emphasis on new buildings, new units and new technologies. The five cards can be upgraded by gathering enough tech points, but there’s no fixed linear progression – a starting card can be replaced with the most advanced version without needing to go through the two stages between. This keeps up the momentum and avoids funneling players down a particular play style, but it does detract from the typical satisfaction of watching your empire progressively advance through the eras, leaving things feeling a little more thematically disjointed. The victory conditions are similarly less clear-cut, requiring three random achievements spread across the 4X spectrum rather than presenting the chance to win with a singular focus. Advance your tech dial a number of spaces equal to this slot's number, plus 1 for each type of resource you have (including resources on natural wonder tokens). Knowing where you want certain cards at the right time for maximum impact is crucial. Moving onto the different focus card types you have at your disposal. The five areas are culture, science, economy, industry and military. Culture cards allows you to place down control tokens,which help you expand your territory and claim any resources that might be nearby. Assemble your forces. Ibrahim (Unique Diplomacy Card): When you move a caravan to one of the Ottoman players' cities, place 1 trade token from the supply on 1 of your focus cards. Then, the Ottoman player places 1 trade token from the supply on 1 of their focus cards. After you move a caravan to the capital of the player with the "Ibrahim" card, gain 1 resource of your choice from the supply. [2 caravans] Then reinforce each of your control tokens that is in or adjacent to a space containing a friendly army.

The focus bar is a set of five (six in Terra Incognita) slots in a row, each with a numerical value and corresponding terrain type. As mentioned before, the artwork and design is great, with time and effort being put into making this feel like a tribute to its gaming ancestor from the 90s. Having eight different races to guide through the ages adds variety each time you play and the unique focus card play system is refreshing. The tech dial upgrades give you the sense of improving your choices as you progress too. Once you've grasped the basics, you spend minimal time browsing the rule book looking for clarification on things, so again another plus. Fantasy Flight Games is certainly no stranger to this and often they’re a company that takes smaller risks. However, with their new release of Sid Meier’s Civilization: A New Dawn (Civ: A New Dawn), they’re bringing more Euro-centric game design to a tried and true brand. This title is a civilization game where players will build cities and develop technology, but on a speed and scale rarely encountered in civilization games. Straight out of the box, the components and artwork stays true to Sid Meier with that old school feel but with fresh revamps in places. With a mixture of plastic tokens as well as cardboard ones, it’s a nice balance and looks pleasing once set-up. Be warned though, invest in some plastic grip seal bags to keep the tokens separate as only a few are provided in the box and it helps with faster setup times. To shift the balance in their favor, the red player spends two trade tokens from their military card. This gives them a final combat value of ten, securing their victory over the blue player’s space. They may now replace the highlighted control token with an unreinforced control token of their own, spreading their influence into the blue player’s territory and putting them in a stronger strategic position to lay siege to the blue player’s city, if the red player can maintain their hold on their newly claimed territory. Impose Your Rule Players complete the agendas given on victory cards by accomplishing tasks in five different focus areas: culture, science, economy, industry, and military. Players organize their focus areas by constructing a focus bar at the beginning of the game, which is placed beneath each player’s leader card. A player’s turn revolves around the focus row of five cards below his or her focus bar. Since we are on the topic of focus cards, you now have six instead of five. Your focus bar now has six slots with the two leftmost slots being 1s. The new card is Growth, giving you the option to place districts and reinforce control tokens. Considering the base game made it challenging to reinforce your tokens, it’s good to see an additional opportunity for a defensive playstyle.

Before 1 of your caravans explores, you may place a water token touching that caravan's space. [2 caravans] Move each of your caravans up to 6 spaces. They can move into spaces matching this slot's terrain or lower, as well as water. Civilization: A New Dawn has taken a classic video game and crafted it into a comprehensive 4X tabletop version. Choose from eight different civilizations and then explore, battle, trade and innovate your way to dominate the region. After you place a control token on a mountain space, you may place a control token on a space adjacent to that space (which can trigger the effect again). When placing control tokens, you can place them on empty forest spaces that are not adjacent to an allied city.
