Sega Superstars Tennis is the only game featuring Sonic on the PlayStation 2 that prompts the player if they would like to activate progressive scan without the need to hold down a button combination— Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sonic Riders, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, and Sonic Unleashed all require the player to hold down and during start-up to bring up the prompt, and Sega Genesis Collection requires the player to access the Options menu to enable it. Sega Superstars Tennis is a tennis game by Sumo Digital released for the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS and Mac. Though the PlayStation 2 version of Sega Superstars Tennis has an in-game widescreen setting, only the menu and HUD elements are adjusted for widescreen; the in-game display is stretched from 4:3. It seems his recent athletic clash with Mario has rubbed off on Sonic: here he is with fifteen friends in a brightly coloured, special move-filled variation on good old lawn tennis, not unlike the plumber’s N64, Game Boy Advance and Gamecube outings, on the surface at least. This isn’t a simple formula rip, however: this is pure Sega through and through, from the blue skies to the vibrant Richard Jacques theme, but will it appeal to those whose Sega knowledge starts and ends with a hedgehog? The gameplay in Sega Superstars Tennis is similar to Sega's Virtua Tennis series, with characters able to perform techniques such as lob shots and drop shots. Characters each have different statistics and proficiency in specific areas, such as power or control. Each character also has their own unique "Superstar State", a special ability that can be activated once an accompanying meter is filled. The effects of a Superstar State vary depending on the character; for example, Sonic transforms to Super Sonic and causes the ball to zig-zag when hit, while Gilius summons thunderbolts that can temporarily stun opponents. The game features 10 courts themed after various Sega games, such as Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog and Shibuya Downtown from Jet Set Radio. [3]

It also feels like the team has stripped down the simulation aspect of Virtua Tennis in favor of a design that'd appeal to players who might be turned off by a realistic take of tennis. That's not to say that SEGA Superstars Tennis doesn't play like tennis; it definitely does. You can place hard shots, lobs, play the net and overhand smash the ball with a well positioned shot. You can aim your serves tight or loose to the line to ace your opponent. You can dive for an out of reach ball, even if the animation plays out the character's personality (Sonic does a forward flip instead of sliding to the ball, for example). There are several playable minigames in Sega Superstars Tennis, including ones from Sega games such as a House of the Dead meets Space Invaders game, in which the player has to hit moving targets in the form of zombies, a Space Harrier game, a Puyo Puyo game, and a Virtua Cop game.
