About this deal

Overdrive can be thought of how you get distortion, and distortion is the result. We know it's a gross oversimplification, but in practical terms that's how it works. It’s difficult to wander around in the world of guitar pedals without coming across the Tube Screamer. This iconic overdrive pedal has seen various incarnations since the late 70s, and continues to evolve. The Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer is a reissue of the 1980s original, and is the most popular of the Tube Screamers. It even took the #1 spot in Guitar World’s The Top 50 Stomp Boxes, Devices and Processors of All Time. But enough with the trivia. Let’s talk about why the Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer deserves a spot on your pedalboard. This pretty openly explains what Ben's approach was, but I'm afraid that I'm not sure enough of myself to just blindly transfer concepts over from there to here. Hope you enjoyed our Joyo JF-02 review. For more, be sure to follow Performer Magazine on Facebook. FEATURES The SD-1 has been around for decades, and we feel it has become underrated in the sea of overdrive pedals available today. But don't let its spartan looks and modest price tag fool you. It's a very capable overdrive pedal and has been used and abused on hundreds of pedalboards of pro artists.

The Zendrive was originally designed to emulate the legendary tones of a Dumble Overdrive Special: the elusive amps built by Alexander Dumble cloaked in mystery and played by the likes of Larry Carlton, Carlos Santana and Robben Ford.

What Does an Overdrive Pedal Do?

I always liked my Joyo UD, but never loved it. Flipping the Diode has made enough of a difference to start enjoying this pedal again. However, the JF-2 is special because it brings two of these pedal effects in one – specifically overdrive and distortion. The 9V battery compartment might be considered a bit cheap and the “Darth Maul/demon skull” graphics are admittedly kind of cheezy. Considering the price and the tone, though, it’s a minor detail and easy to overlook. But the question is; what makes a good overdrive pedal? If you're a beginner, choosing the best overdrive pedal for your needs can be a bit overwhelming. These days every pedal manufacturer makes at least one overdrive (in many cases they make a few), leading to hundreds of choices. This very attractive boutique pedal offers three familiar knobs, VOLUME, DRIVE, and TONE. There's also a Gain toggle switch, which changes the LED light from blue to red and gives you more low end grit and punch. Think of it as two levels of boost - the effect is subtle, but still noticeable (you can actually plug in an external foot switch to toggle this setting with your foot).

One thing to note is there are a few legendary drive pedals like the Klon Centaur (which is discontinued and quite expensive) and the Ibanez Tube Screamer, and you'll hear those referenced a good bit since many overdrive pedals on the market today are recreations of those classic circuits. When the clipping circuit is arranged like this, it makes no discernable difference to the sound whether the gates are tied to the sources or drains. James Valentine's Fulltone OCD can be seen at the 16:51 mark in his Rig Rundown video, where he claims it's his "main lead sound." If you’re a guitarist or know great guitar legends, you’ll know one thing they don’t play with is their pedals. Pedals give your guitar signal unique effects that make your audience want more and more. The JOYO JF-02 Ultimate drive is one of such pedals. After testing it out in our lab, we found it to be a nice overall pedal. While it is not perfectly overdrive or distortion, it is a pretty good general gain pedal for those who need “one that does it all.” The JF-02 Ultimate Drive is actually JOYO’s best-selling pedal as far as we know. And yes, I also added filtering ceramic capacitor 100nF between power supply pin and ground pin of opamp (less noise).

Of all the pedals listed, the Plimsoul is sort of the odd one out - I had always intended to get that pedal as a sometime occasional swap-out for the OCD, but it is more of a medium to heavy gain than the light to medium of the OCD - I find the OCD slightly crunchier than the relatively smoother Plimsoul although in my area of interest they do have some degree of overlap.EarthQuaker Devices built this pedal specifically with low wattage amps in mind. We played it on four tube amps and it sounded great, although different, with all of them.
