About this deal

Shimano has provided claimed weights for every component in the disc groupset, along with a comparison to an equivalent R9170 Di2 groupset. If the point where the two chain ends meet is the beginning of an outer link, add two links (right image). The reality is that there’s no demand for mechanical from the pros who race on Dura-Ace, and it’s certainly waning on the consumer side too. However, Smith has used that data to develop his own 'UltraFast' chain, which is essentially the fastest chain he's tested (Shimano's Dura-Ace CN-7901) ultrasonically cleaned and treated with a blend of paraffin wax, pure PTFE, and molybdenum sulfide lubricants. This recipe produces, Smith says, provides the lowest consistently measureable frictional losses of everything he's tested.

Each lever is powered by a CR1632 coin cell, claimed to last around 1.5 to 2 years of riding. Riders can choose to run their levers wired if desired, which apparently has the side-effect of increasing battery life by around 50 per cent. That mechanical Dura-Ace is no more will be a blow to purists, and I can’t help feeling a little wistful. Shimano says it’s reduced the amount of free stroke in the brake levers and they now benefit from Servo Wave, which makes the relationship between lever travel and pad travel non-linear. With the miles I found the shifting imprecise and needing to be readjusted constantly. Also being in mountains I had to regear and found the cassette 22-30 only to exist in shimano. When receiving the shimano cassette, as an engineer I was disappointed with the construction vs sram. However the new gearing was perfect for the hills in my region. Wireless communication takes place between the levers and the rear derailleur, with the latter always ‘on’ and listening for signals. The main battery is claimed to last for around 1,000km of riding, while the coin cells in the levers should manage 1.5 to 2 years.According to Smith, swapping out a worst-case scenario of the least-efficient chain lubricated with a particularly ineffective lubricant for a best-case scenario saves more than 10 watts (when testing at a 250w load). Note that these manuals are still relevant even if you’re not using a Shimano chain - they’re derailleur specific, not tied to any chain brand or type. You don’t need to add any extra links, just connect the chain and you’re good to go. Note that this last method only really applies to non-shadow rd derailleurs and cassettes smaller than 28T. Off-road (GRX and 12-speed MTB) chain sizing While the numbers are familiar, Shimano has tweaked the ratios in the middle of the cassette, offering smaller jumps in the most-used gears. The ratios are as follows:

In normal riding, the shifting seems to be impossible to fluster. You can crash through gears if you’re an absolute savage about dumping multiple gears at very low cadence, but by and large, the groupset lives up to its claimed ability to shift under hard pedalling loads. Perhaps the most visually arresting part of the new groupset, the ST-R9270 hydraulic lever bodies are slightly larger than those of R9100, and the lever bodies curve inwards slightly. With "at home" lubricating methods or ultrasonic application, you can achieve great results, if done correctly. But, this process is simply on another level of performance. In contrast, Dura-Ace 7800 requires a 20-degree throw for both upshifts and single downshifts, so if anything, downshift throw on 7900 has gotten longer. Perhaps Shimano were measuring 7900’s throws from a vertical line? Either way, tsk, tsk.

Shimano HG-901 XTR/Dura-Ace 11 Speed Chain

All of his tests are calibrated with a constant 250w load, a realistic mark for a rider pedaling fairly hard. Instead, 7900 can only downshift two gears per sweep instead of three and although Shimano claim a 20 percent reduction in shift lever throw, our tape measures and protractors suggested otherwise. Upshifts still require a lengthy 20-degree arc (or 40mm of linear throw, 30mm of which is nothing but slop) and single downshifts an even longer 27 degrees or so. You’re almost there, but there’s one more thing to keep in mind. Some chains are directional. They’ll either have an arrow ‘ printed’ on them, or something that indicates the inside or outside of the chain. Have the two chain ends meet at the large chainring, and then add two or three links, depending on the zero point shown in Shimano’s image below: Perhaps the one real surprise is the freehub design. With Micro Spline already established as a standard, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Shimano would adopt it for the road too, but it hasn’t.

Shimano's recommendations for these bikes are slightly different.
