About this deal

Well, what does? I always say to people, tell me what it is that you think costs more? So it’s not that they cost more, it’s that the upfront costs more. So actually, if you’re gonna keep something for longer and we change our habits, we’re a little bit disposable at the moment, we are gonna have to shift our habits to valuing things that we have forever. I love it. I’ve got jumpers with holes in at home and I can’t tell you the pleasure I get out of looking at the holes in the jumpers. I think: I’ve worn it out, that’s amazing.

I don’t think I really understood how your student debt interest rate could vary over time and how it would be affected by inflation. I’m not sure if I’m right, but I kind of assumed that your student debt interest rate was kind of, was fixed over the rest, over the 20 years.

Laughter) Mattered at all would be helpful, I think. Yes, I do. I actually, I get frustrated because I honestly, the opportunity in the green economy, it’s happening. It’s going to happen. Listen, if we’re completely wrong about climate change, it doesn’t matter. We get clean air, we get cleaner river. You know, it’s just so much good coming out of it. It’s going to happen. Why on earth wouldn’t you embrace that as a business opportunity? If you couldn’t care less about the climate, why wouldn’t you embrace the green economy? There is so much new opportunity and an opportunity to bring in people with such diverse skills and such diverse knowledge and create jobs that have never existed before. It’s exciting. Actually, this is a question about housing. So you were just all talking about your mortgages. And all I was thinking is that we are encouraged to own our homes still in Britain. It’s a big thing. And I rent. I can’t even, I wouldn’t even begin to think about owning because I’m freelance. So forget it. You know, they just, they won’t even look at me. But in Europe, renting is quite a big thing. Is it so bad to rent? They also knew an awful lot about crypto — as FT columnist-turned-teacher Lucy Kellaway has also found with her students — not to mention gambling and “ buy now pay later”, even though you have to be over 18 (legally) to do any of these. Yes. Overspenders Anonymous, Debtors Anonymous, and these are really helpful organisations, but I guess the partner has to admit that they’re powerless. You know, that’s the step one. Yeah, yeah. And I don’t know about you, but so many things in the finance world we feel a bit threatened or confused or anxious, especially with this overlay of the cost of living crisis, which I’m sure you’re going to be hearing it all the time about how people’s finances are under pressure. And do you talk much about the cost of living crisis at home or rather the effects of it? Like you can’t have a new pair of trainers this month?

I’m Claer Barrett, Isabel’s colleague and host of the FT’s personal finance show, Money Clinic. And this week, a double billing: Working It and Money Clinic have joined forces. The second group of companies Algy thinks are worthy of further investigation are those that pay a dividend. If you’re not sure what that is, listen up. The quality screen was the best, though I should say as a caveat, what came out best over 10 years isn’t necessarily gonna come out best over the next 10 years . . . Yeah, So it’s about it’s about work and technology. My working title is ‘Human Robots’. So it’s exploring both the kind of dystopian and hopefully more utopian possibilities about what’s coming towards us.

Um, I do think business is, it should be shown as a proper topic at school and must be part of that in the same way maths should be part, you know, if you’re gonna become a biologist you’re gonna need to do the numbers, you know. So I definitely think that, you know, just fundamental stuff like, you know, what’s a balance sheet? It sounds really complicated. It is really, really simple. It’s just adding up and taking away. It’s as simple as that. So, you know, demystifying it, I think, would be really important. I think that would encourage more people to think that they could go into business. The other things like people’s time, the time that they’re putting in as the business owner. That’s something that people who are self-employed often think actually.
