About this deal

For owners of Apple’s iPhone, the vehicle supports wireless CarPlay. Some of the initial issues BMW and Mini had with keeping a solid wireless CarPlay connection seemed to have been resolved and we had zero issues during our week with the vehicle. Android Auto on the other hand? That’s another story since the Mini SE does not support Android Auto right now. But BMW has been working on adding support to its vehicles, so future support is expected.

Disable the traction control, and the Mini Cooper SE becomes downright hilarious. All that torque makes it easy to spin the front wheels like a hooligan – especially in corners, where the resulting understeer is easy to control with the throttle. Prefer to chill? The Mini Cooper SE features four drive modes (Sport, Mid, Green, and Green+), and two levels of regen (low to coast and creep, and high for one-pedal driving). If you're familiar with the gas-powered Cooper S, then you'll feel right at home with the Mini Cooper SE. Both cars are pretty much identical inside and out, save for a few minor cosmetic tweaks. Maximum flight range specification is a proxy for radio link strength and resilience, not aircraft battery capability. It only refers to the maximum, one-way flight distance. Data was measured in an open environment without interference. Please pay attention to the return prompt on the DJI Fly app during actual flight. Refer to the following applicable standard in different countries and regions: The punchier i3 S donates its power electronics and 135kW/181bhp electric motor, produced by BMW at its Landshut plant. These components are normally located at the rear of the i3 S, but they’re slotted under the Mini’s bonnet, cradled in a frame that even uses the existing three engine-mounting points. The original DJI Mavic Mini still rides high in our guide to the best beginner drones and, given the DJI Mini SE is internally identical to that drone, there's no reason to expect it'll perform any differently. For more detailed information, please refer to the terms and conditions of the relevant finance documents, copies of which are available from any authorised UK MINI Dealership.

That's not to say the Mini Cooper SE is always high strung. With two levels of regen (high for one-pedal driving, and low to coast and creep), plus four drive modes to choose from (Sport, Mid, Green, and Green+), it calms down when you want it to. Here is where we see the biggest difference between the two models. The New Mini 2 SE comes with DJI’s new style of controllers, the RC-N1, supporting the tech DJI call OccuSync 2, the principal advantage of which is longer transmission range. This controller is now offered across DJI’s entire consumer range. The most obvious exterior update is in front, where Mini's familiar grille shape remains, but is closed for better aerodynamics. Both the plug-shaped 'E' logo and 'S' emblems on the rear hatch, front repeaters, and door sills are painted yellow. Our current advice for beginners, then, is that the DJI Mini 2 is the best drone you can buy and is unlikely, according to the latest rumors, to be succeeded imminently. But for sheer value, the DJI Mini SE is certainly an interesting new option that's worth considering if you don't mind its slightly dated video skills and flying experience. The experience of getting started and into the air with the Mini SE is very similar to other DJI aircraft (like the Mavic 3 or Mini 3 Pro) because they all use the app DJI Fly. The app is equipped with a useful tutorial – made of clear animated graphics and on-screen instructions. It’s not over-the-top or boring, and leaves you far equipped to fly further than a simple video would.

The Mini Electric is a very complete little EV. It preserves pretty much everything we like about a standard Mini Cooper S, but it’s more accelerative where it matters, and has zero local emissions. It proves that the hot hatch will have a future as an EV. And it reinforces something we learned with the VW e-Golf – that an electric car doesn’t have to be wantonly radical to be a success. Stuffing a car we already know and like with battery cells can, with the correct execution, be a good tactic. The Harman-Kardon audio system sounds decent and features Bluetooth connectivity, AM / FM terrestrial radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Walmart seemed really keen to sell the DJI Mini SE, but that won't be happening for some time (if ever). Capture the Detail - DJI Mini SE supports 12MP aerial photos and 2.7K HD videos. A 3-axis motorized gimbal provides superior camera stability and ensures clear ultra-smooth footage. Lastly, with a drone like the DJI MIni SE you are getting a premium product, and you can feel that. The app is amazing. The controls are well thought out. It's just fantastic.

The instrument panel presents info clearly but is limited in functionality. It doesn’t have the customization options available on other EVs in this class that let you tailor the view to your liking, and we found the display was easily washed out in bright sunlight and often hard to read. Our test car came standard with a head-up display, but it’s a low-end type that uses a small plastic panel on the dash as a secondary display instead of projecting the information onto the windshield. Some tech is only available on some trims, like self parking and the color heads-up display. The Qi wireless phone charger is also optional, and is located inside the center armrest. Once again, there is essentially nothing to separate the drones here; they feature the same sized CMOS image sensors and the same features – well, except Panorama. MINI Navigation with 8.8” display including RTTI, Apple Car Play, MINI Connected and public charging locations. The same airframe has more or less the same level of speed and manoeuvrability. Not a surprise, for sure, but it is still worth noting that the wind resistance of 10.5 meters per second is a notable improvement on the first Mavic Mini, which means that both of these drones are a little more reliable in gusts. This is helped by DJI’s software literally enabling the drone to lean into the wind at up to 20˚ (or 30˚ in the faster ‘Sport’ mode). Keeping things cost-effective (and helping differentiating DJI’s products) means the Mini 2 SE still restricts itself to 2.7K video. This is more or less the same pixel count as the iPhone 14 Pro Max (2796 x 1290), so it’s nothing to sniff at, but of course those looking for 4K will be disappointed. DJI, no doubt, would direct them to the pricier Mini 3 series.

It also has the ability to top up your phone charge from its much bigger battery; no bad thing given flying keeps the phone screen on so draws power. With a good, modern phone you also get a good, bright screen. Strangely, it's too small for most modern handsets. Perhaps Mini just expects you to buy an iPhone 13 mini? At least there's a pair of USB ports (one Type-A and one Type-C) in front of the center console for charging and connectivity. Video is captured at either 2.7K 30fps (that’s 2720 x 1530 pixels) or 1080p at up to 60fps. As a low-resolution ‘economy’ option, this is better than you might expect. The bitrate is 40Mbps, which is also a bit lower than some, especially since the only compression algorithm option is H.264, not H.265. Panorama is an automated option, in which you can simply hover the drone looking in the right direction and let it take a series of images in sequence, which it will also automatically stitch for you into a panorama. This feature – available on most DJI drones – was left off the Mini SE but it seems the Mini 2 SE can handle it.

MINI THRILL MAXIMISED.

The Mini Cooper SE is an absolute hoot to drive and it's one of the fastest Minis available today. The ride is typically Mini, meaning it's stiff, but unlike Mini's ICE versions, it's tuned to be slightly more compliant. Modern Minis are full of personality and charisma, with quirky yet delightful retro design touches inside and out, and the Mini Cooper SE is no exception. It's basically identical to the gasoline-powered 3-door Cooper S, with a few tweaks. MINI Electric Level 3 features premium design and styling details, plus additional features like a panoramic sunroof, park assist and Navigation Plus. However, the Mini asks you to understand a few home truths. BMW could have given it more range and will do down the line. But, that will likely make it heavier and more expensive, with longer charging times and less cabin space. For this first proper production attempt it studied a lot of Mini owner data, sussed out the average Cooper S travels 26 miles a day, and moulded the Mini Electric’s performance to suit that brief, needing only a couple of recharges to slip into the average Mini audience’s life unnoticed.
