About this deal

A Levels: Mathematics at A. Your Mathematics qualifications must have been achieved no more than two academic years prior to entry. GCSEs: English at C or 4. The compulsory courses in your first year are almost the same across all Informatics degrees as they all require a strong foundation of both mathematics and computation. Students studying Cognitive Science or on joint degrees will have varying requirements but will take a subset of the courses listed below along with courses from their other degree area. Introduction to Computation (20 credits) The Cognitive Science Programme is jointly organised by the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS) and the School of Informatics. It is an interdisciplinary degree which attempts to understand the human mind. It focuses on abilities such as reasoning, perception, memory, awareness, emotion, attention, judgment, motor control and language use. Studying at the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics provides you with a strong foundation in computer science. You will also gain a new perspective on the ways computational thinking can be applied to different settings. Any student who is missing credits after the April diet will receive a "deferred" progression decision in June. You must attempt the August resit assessment for any course you have not passed. After the August diet your progression status will be reconsidered by the progression board. UG2 Cognitive Science deferred progression after the May exam diet

BSc Cognitive Science - School of Informatics. Emphasising mathematical and computational approaches to the study of the human mind. Study in this area is based on the mathematics and logic of algorithms, which form the foundations of programming. If you are considering buying a computer, your first decision is whether to buy a desktop, laptop or a tablet. A tablet is the most limited; you won’t be able to do much coursework on one. Most students find laptops the most versatile, but the decision is personal. You will type quite a lot and should choose a set-up that lets you do so comfortably. In laptops the trade-off between a large screen and the weight of a machine you will carry around needs careful consideration. For most purposes, any modern processor will be fine; amount of RAM tends to be more important and if you’re going to upgrade anything you might consider this first. Coursework is unlikely to require you to have more disk space than now comes as standard.

English language qualifications must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the degree you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL or Trinity ISE, in which case it must be no more than two years old. Also in the fifth year, you take the MPP2 course, in which you do the bulk of work on your project, MA Cognitive Science (Humanities) - School of PPLS. Emphasising theoretical and experimental approaches to the philosophical, linguistical and psychological nature of language and the mind. If you meet these criteria, but fail some courses, you will receive the credits for the failed courses "on aggregate". You may not resit these courses. In the fifth year, you take MInf Project (Part 2) and a further 80 points of courses typically at level 11 ((Master's level). There is a sortable list of courses available from the Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the attempt to build artificial systems that have intelligent behaviour. All of our programmes start with a common core of mathematics courses and informatics courses, with increasing choices for specialisation in later years depending on your interests. If you are taking a joint degree, you will also have to take compulsory courses in your second subject.

BEng Computer Science students must meet professional accreditations requirements as specified in the Degree Programme Table. If you do not meet the professional accreditation requirements but do meet the criteria to progress to year 4 BSc Computer Science, you will be transferred to the BSc Computer Science programme. You should also consider proposing a project in your area of interest. If you find someone interested in negotiating a self-proposed project with you, and willing to commit to this, the deadline for proposing it can be extended if you inform the project coordinator. No one knows what it is like to study here more than the students themselves. You can read about our students’ experience and follow us on social media to learn more about studying in the School of Informatics. In your fourth year your optional courses will likely be from the School of Informatics as there are now a much larger number of unique and specialised courses available. The option to choose a course from outside the School of Informatics is still available but you are advised to get permission from the course organiser and have the course choice approved by your personal tutor first. Please note: courses are subject to change and will be updated in April for September’s intake IB: HL: Mathematics (Analysis and approaches only) at 6. Your Mathematics qualifications must have been achieved no more than two academic years prior to entry. SL: English at 5.
