The Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Plus is straightforward to set up using the app, with its first task set to map the floor, although this can be disabled if you want to do it later. However, it’s a good demonstration of Deebot Ozmo N8 Plus’s mapping technology as you can watch it fill in parts of the room before it reaches them. You can choose one of four vacuuming levels – Quiet, Standard, Max, and Max+ – and the whole floor, individual rooms, or specific areas to clean. This last option relies on having your floor completely mapped beforehand. It does a good job at dodging furniture and climbing onto my rug and over my dining chair legs, can vacuum underneath my furniture and my bed (hallelujah), and the battery life is perfect for my smallish living space.

The mopping feature can’t keep up with mopping by hand. The weight (~3.6 kg – 8 lbs.) of the robot vacuum mop hybrid is simply too low. Once you’ve set up the emptying station and charged the Deebot N8+, which takes around four hours, you control it using the Ecovacs companion app, available for Android and iOS. Set the robot off on its first cleaning mission and it scans its surroundings, scouting out an area worth covering. Once it’s established a decently sized space, it cleans it, only going on to seek out the next area afterwards. That leaves us with the mopping. Here I was more disappointed. During my tests, I had to push the mop’s settings up to maximum to get enough water flowing through the system to make the floor look like it was using enough water to give it a clean. I also found it worked best when programmed to ‘deep’ clean, which makes the parallel lines along which it mops closer together. This slows the progress of the mop, though, making it slower than when it’s vacuuming. Of course, Ecovacs’ Deebot T9+ is more than just a vacuum. It offers air freshener and mopping abilities too. Swapping between the two functions is as simple as putting in a different component. It registers immediately, and you can send the device on its way. You can still send the robotic vacuum out on a cleaning trip with peace of mind. It’ll reliably clean the flat, even if it’s not 100% perfectly tidy. Overall, that leaves it performing below average in our tests. However, this isn’t a terrible score for this kind of robot vacuum, which is better at covering a whole house than it is at targeting concentrated spillages.

However, the hair might wrap itself around the brushes (main brush and side brushes) from time to time. But if you have small children and/or pets at home, it's hard to keep up with tidying up. Usually, there’ll be at least some toys on the floor. Ecovacs states that the suction power goes up to 2,300Pa, which is stronger than average for a robot vacuum. Although the Deebot N8+ doesn’t utilise this level of suction in standard mode, it does automatically boost it when the robot detects it’s moved from a hard floor onto a carpet. If you want a more thorough clean, maximum power mode is easily selected from the app, and the power level can be adjusted during cleaning.
