About this deal

According to Javelle Taft, bar manager at Death & Co.’s East Village outpost, it’s important to remember the origins of rum when considering the spirit today, something that certain brands are actively striving to do. “Rum was birthed out of colonialism and slave labor,” he says. “Since the turn of the century, Caribbean island style rum producers are working hard to reset the tragic history of where rum is today, in comparison to how it started.” August 16th holds special significance in the Venezuelan and Latin American calendars as the International Day of Rum. This date emphasizes the cultural significance and craftsmanship involved in making rum, thanks to brands like Ron Diplomático. Additionally, various celebrations and events throughout the year underline its deep-seated influence on Venezuelan culture and heritage. The Most Important Rum Brands

Diplomático, which is sold in 95 countries, is produced at a distillery set up in 1959 at the foot of the Andes Mountain in a small town called La Miel. The rum is made from a mix of sugarcane honey, pure water from the Andes mountains, and sugarcane molasses that undergo three different distillation processes. The rum is aged in four different kinds of barrels, predominantly those used for bourbon and malt whisky barrels. This provides the rum its complexity, flavour, and smoothness. The iconic face on the bottles of the Diplomático range is of Don Juancho (Don Juan Meléndez). He was a local nobleman who put his heart into exploring the sources, ingredients, and methods behind the many alluring flavours of rum and other traditional beverages. Santa Teresa Gran Reserva is a unique blend of rums aged for up to five years. Sometimes overshadowed by the Distillery’s flagship expression, but this one stands well on its own with the same quality and complexity, while offering a different profile and its own flavors. As contents are drawn off, the sherry is replaced with sherry from the next highest tier in the solera and so forth. [ citation needed] List of brands [ edit ] Santa Teresa 1796 Solera Rum is a top-notch expression coming from a distillery with centuries of experience. The distillery was founded by the Count of Trover in 1796. It was originally dedicated to the creation of abundant and quality sugarcane. At the time, most of the sugarcane in Venezuela was imported from the Dominican Republic, even though Venezuela’s climate is ideal for its growth. The Hacienda Santa Teresa Distillery set out to change that. In the case of Santa Teresa 1796, each bottle is a blend of rums ranging in age from 35 years to 5 years. The older rums, however, are only a small proportion of the overall blend. The production of Venezuelan rum is a meticulous process, beginning with the harvesting of sugarcane. The sugarcane is carefully selected and harvested at its peak of ripeness to ensure the highest sugar content. Once harvested, the sugarcane is promptly transported to the distillery to maintain its freshness and quality. The sherry intended for bottling is drawn from the lowest tier. In theory, this is about a quarter to a third of the barrel contents at any one time. Each producer, however, is free to manage the solera as they choose.Kunal Patel, Managing Partner of Monika Enterprises, says, ‘Diplomático is our crown jewel and the entire range makes up our premium rum segment. Though the sipping rum category is still emerging in India, it’s one of the best rums to start off your sipping journey with.’ Premium aged rum is a relatively new concept in India, but is fast catching on. Sales of Diplomático range has been tripled in India since it first became available in India three years ago. The rums are currently available in Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Gurugram. Veroes: Highlighting the importance of its designation of origin, Ron Veroes has endeavored to preserve the authenticity of Venezuelan rum. Their commitment to quality and tradition is reflected in their products. Venezuelan rum, with its rich history, intricate production process, and commitment to quality, has risen to prominence as one of the world’s finest types of rum. Recognised for its smoothness, complexity, and depth of flavour, Venezuelan rum reflects the country's dedication to the craft of distillation, as well as its favourable climate and geography for sugarcane cultivation. Distillation is a crucial stage in the production of Venezuelan rum, and it is here that the spirit begins to take on its unique character. Venezuelan rum is typically distilled in column stills, which provide a high level of control over the distillation process and result in a smoother and more refined spirit. The distillate is then aged in oak barrels, which impart additional flavours and complexity to the rum.
