About this deal

His English was refined at the University of London. For seven years, he was an English teacher at Haydon School where he later became the head of English department. He let go of the teaching career and wrote his first novel, The Gates of Rome. The story is of the historical war between two noble houses of England . The House of Lancaster and the House of York. The famous rift that was known as the War of Roses. Which in turn inspired the very famous George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. After a brief scene at the deathbed of Edward III, whose descendants comprise the two houses, we jump forward 75 years to unrest in France. King Henry VI is a young, weak king, a shadow of his father, Henry V, who won the legendary Battle of Agincourt. Spymaster Derry Brewer (one of the few fictional characters in Stormbird) understands that this king cannot hold the French lands for long, and conjures up that most medieval of remedies, a royal marriage.

The introduction of the most prominent fictional character, the king’s spymaster, Derihew Brewer, can be forgiven (even if the name cannot), as Brewer is central to all of the events that take place and, as Iggulden points out, someone like Brewer would certainly have existed. Hero: So that part is sorta debatable. I'm not entirely certain there is a hero in this book. Too many players. However the spymaster is a good place to start. He's obvs got a humor part to play as well as the machinations of getting sh!t done. In 2017, Conn Iggulden released the first book in his first fiction fantasy series, Darien: Empire of Salt. [14] This series is being published under the pen name C.F. Iggulden to avoid confusion with Iggulden's historical fiction novels. [ citation needed] The second book in the series, Shiang, was released on 2018 followed by The Sword Saint in 2019. The events in Stormbird take place roughly between 1443 and 1454, although Iggulden admits in his postscript notes that several items are moved around for the sake of narrative. The notes, along with the dizzying family trees provided at the start, are riveting, as they confirm most of the historical details and events.

The characters in the story are well rounded. I liked the spymaster Derihew Brewer - a real slimey schemer but loyal to King and Queen. Reading the book I found myself flitting to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, this tipped me off about Lord Suffolk and John Cade ( led a revolt of Kentish men who even stormed the Tower of London). Bettinger, Brendan (26 June 2013). King Henry VI is still held prisoner. His Lancastrian queen, Margaret of Anjou, rides south with an army of victorious northerners, accompanied by painted warriors from the Scottish Highlands. With the death of York, Margaret and her army seem unstoppable. This flatness in particular dragged down the book for me, because it's full of scenes surrounding battles. Raising banners. Planning. Waiting for the battle to start. The battle. Fleeing. Betrayal. It all gets a bit repetitive with time, which is a shame. Obviously the battles really happened and I would never want to erase them from the book, but give me characters with some depths to root for or be sad about when they die. Oh yeah..sorry...the book? It's great. Um here is a spoiler that's not really a spoiler-the Tudors win. If this is news to you and you're angry with me-please immediately run to the bookstore and buy a History book. Now. For the rest of you- the author tells a great tale of essentially the fight of Edward IV to claim ("reclaim", one could say, technically) the Crown and for Richard III to keep it. To put that into context. I thought the Genghis Khan series much better than his Roman series - partly because he seemed to have found his style and tempo and secondly as an Ancient Historian by degree I have read many better Rome based series than his, which I felt were solid rather than spectacular.

It is no surprise that Henry VI is seen as a weak King by the English; it is no surprise that his nobles wanted a stronger man to lead them. When the King enters his catatonic state they have their perfect opportunity. History can’t blame them too much. They simply wanted a better leader not one who surrender hard won land in France; they wanted a man like Henry Bolingbroke or his son: they wanted the house of York. Though, the ultimate climax of this is still a few books away. The surrendering or French soil is seen through the eyes of an English archer who has settled with his family. What he sees makes the King’s decisions seem ever weaker and born from pure fear, ultimately, providing more reason to prefer the Yorkist leaders. By detailing her development from a shy teenage princess forced to defend her position and marriage against volatile political factions, Iggulden makes Margaret the heroine of the story. Throw into the mix a mentally ill and physically weak king who increasingly relies on her guidance, and she becomes almost a martyr. That’s about it for the moment. If you’d like to get in touch with me leave a comment in the forum or you can tweet me @Conn_Iggulden. I’ll leave it there for the moment. If you’ve read my books, you know an awful lot about the way I think already. There’s no point overdoing it.
