About this deal

Intrepid Reporter: Sort of...it's more a matter of Anne getting herself hired as a reporter so she has a means of investigating the mystery of the man in the brown suit. My first encounter with Agathie Christie's work was not a disappointment - although, perhaps, it is not one of her most popular books, it was certainly an enjoyable entry into this genre. During the second half of the novel the story starts to introduce diary entries which I found to be slightly jarring and disrupted the flow of the story.

Facsimile of 1924 UK first edition (HarperCollins), November 5, 2007, Hardcover, 312 pp, ISBN 0-00-726518-2 Two points of views. This kept the book fast paced and very misleading, although Pedler was extremely sexist and sarcastic - his diary entries were interesting to read, and he was a little hilariously pathetic at times. The book was adapted by Alan Shayne Productions in association with Warner Brothers Television as TV movie in 1988. The adaptation is set in a more contemporary era than the 1920s and many details are changed as a result. The youngest of three children of the Miller family. The Millers had two other children: Margaret Frary Miller (1879–1950), called Madge, who was eleven years Agatha's senior, and Louis Montant Miller (1880–1929), called Monty, ten years older than Agatha. Thompson, Laura (2008). Agatha Christie: An English Mystery. London: Headline Review. ISBN 978-0-7553-1488-1. What's hilarious is that throughout the movie the characters keep running into each other, like, Africa's the equivalent of some small town, you know, where bumping into one's neighbors is a sure bet. Christie's espionage novels are so entertaining—totally unbelievable, but carried out with such enthusiasm. While reading this one, I thought of M.M. Kaye's Death in … series, published in the 1950s, they could have been modelled on this novel. I was also reminded a bit of Ian Fleming's Diamonds Are Forever, probably mostly because of the diamond angle, and because I know that Fleming was an admirer of Christie's writing. Pretty, young Anne came to London looking for adventure. In fact, adventure comes looking for her—and finds her immediately at Hyde Park Corner tube station. Anne is present on the platform when a thin man, reeking of mothballs, loses his balance and is electrocuted on the rails.

The friendships (and romance) At one point, in this book our protagonist, Anne Beddingfield, meets a new acquaintance, and their friendship slowly develops over time into true companionship. Also, for those who like a little romance, there is definitely some present. It felt a little 'cheesy' at times, but sometimes, a little extra cheese is what you need. Their relationship was, to put, a little casually, very cute, although maybe it was a bit too much at times (especially when Anne immediately fell in love, claiming she loves him and wants to spend her life with him, when she literally just let him a couple of minutes ago, but still, it was heartwarming).Dining with the Christies before the trip, Belcher had suggested setting a mystery novel in his home, the Mill House at Dorney and naming the book The Mystery of the Mill House; and had insisted on being in it as well. He is the inspiration for the central character Sir Eustace Pedler, having been given a title at Archie's suggestion. [8] The Mill House also makes an appearance, albeit located in Marlow. A great read. As always, Christie is a master of the crime/detective genre, managing to make this a fun and exciting romp without decreasing any of the mystery and sense of the sinister. The Man in the Brown Suit is a television movie adaptation of an Agatha Christie mystery novel of the same name about an American woman getting involved in a diamond theft in South Africa. Here we have a similar story but set in 1988 and with a loud American, who seems to think everyone around her is deaf. Ann witnesses an accident and a man in a brown suit takes something from the body (not a roll of film as in the book). The actress playing Ann is awful, as is the script. The way she get close, very close to her fellow actors (Col Race when they first meet) could be seen as assault. She's too jaunty, too silly - ooh shall I go home or stay here? Oooh I'll stay here an have an adventure!!! This from a forty year old woman. The US serialisation was in The Blue Book Magazine in three instalments from September (Volume 39, Issue 5) to November 1924 (Volume 40, Issue 1) with each issue containing an uncredited illustration. Almost a month later, Anne awakens in a hut on an island in the Zambezi with Harry Rayburn, who rescued her. He reveals that someone deliberately caused her to fall. Young Anne Beddingfeld is looking for adventure, when she witnesses what seems to appear as an accidental death on the London Underground it soon leads her travelling to South Africa. The English Catalogue of Books. Vol.XI (A-L: January 1921 – December 1925). Millwood, New York: Kraus Reprint Corporation. 1979. p.309. The Man in the Brown Suit isn't your typical Agatha Christie. It reads more like a thriller than a mystery. Instead of a murder and an investigation with a small group of suspects, it's more of a heroine's journey laden with suspicious happenings, close calls, and romantic intrigue. With her clue in hand she gains a commission from the newspaper leading the search for the “man in the brown suit,” and her investigation leads her to take passage on a South Africa–bound ocean liner. On board, she meets a famous socialite, a fake missionary, a possible secret service agent, and the M.P. at whose estate the second murder occurred. She learns about a secretive criminal mastermind known only as the Colonel and of stolen diamonds connected to it all. The novel was adapted as a 2017 episode of the French television series Les Petits Meurtres d'Agatha Christie.
