About this deal

What the book needed was the French touch, not the Hemingway touch; instead of leaden plot, more poetic feeling. The penny plainness of it all saps the mystery.

Be warned: Goodreads will "recommend" this book to you automatically if you've read OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS by Truman Capote.clinical: there is no real attempt to involve the reader's emotions, as the author sets down Jimmie's life story--his first experience during his high school days, his life as a cabin boy, a tennis bum, his adventures in Hollywood I dug up what I wrote when I originally finished this book. Almost six years old, so can't say I remember what everything meant, but there's interesting things going on anyway and it pulls together a bunch of what I was reading at the time (and also it has no capital letters, which was a thing I was still doing then): Kent ve Tuz, içselleştirdiği toplumsal koşullandırmalar doğrultusunda, insanın "doğası" gereği heteroseksüel olmak zorunda olduğunu düşünen, ancak kadınlara karşı da herhangi bir cinsel çekim hissetmeyen genç bir erkek olan Jim’in, homoseksüel çevrelerde farklı ilişki formlarındaki konumlanışını ve kendini arayış sürecini işliyor. Jim’in bu yolculuktaki kılavuzu ise, ilk gençlik yıllarında yakın arkadaşı Bob ile yaşadığı duygusal ve cinsel yakınlaşmanın ideali ve Bob’a günün birinde yeniden kavuşacak olmanın hayali. The City and the Pillar is the third published novel by American writer Gore Vidal, written in 1946 and published on January 10, 1948. The story is about a young man who is coming of age and discovers his own homosexuality. [2] When Jim finally goes home for Christmas, he learns that his father is dead and (more alarming to him) that Bob has married. Hoping their affair can resume despite this, Jim is anxious to see him again.

After a considerable time, Jim, visiting his family in Virginia, runs into Bob. They agree to meet in New York. When this happens, they sit in Bob’s hotel room reminiscing and drinking. Jim has drunk so much that Bob persuades him to stay the night. After they are in bed, Jim advances on Bob, who repulses him cruelly, saying, “What are you doing, anyway? . . . You’re a queer, you’re nothing but a damned queer! Go on and get your ass out of here!” The two struggle, and in his drunkenness, Jim strangles Bob, leaving him dead in the room and going to the bar in which the novel opens and closes. The prose is frank, straight-talking, no frills. Some have said bland, to which I disagree. I really appreciated it, and read through it at speed. yazar Iain Banks'ın 'Eşekarısı Fabrikası' isimli aykırı romanını okuyordum bir süre önce, orada Gore Vidal'dan bahsediliyordu. At last he came to a decision. He would leave the booth and go talk to the man behind the bar. It was a long voyage but he was ready for it. On Borlú’s request, posters go up around the city of Besźel asking for information about the dead woman. He gets a call from a colleague, Yaszek, informing him that the policzai (the police) have found the van that was used to transport the dead woman’s body. The van is owned by Mikyael Khurusch, a man with a criminal record for theft and soliciting prostitution. Borlú and Corwi interrogate Khurusch, who claims his van went missing. They learn that he has an alibi for the night of the murder.Well, this was a whole lot darker than I’d expected. I’ve given it 4 stars, but as I’m reflecting on it more perhaps it should be 5, if only for what it stood for and meant in 1948?
