Little did she know, when she was working on a little fabric elephant to be used as a pin cushion, that she was laying the foundation stone for the international company of the future - Margarete Steiff GmbH. Our Steiff Museum has one more attraction. Children can ride on life-size tigers, elephants and camels through the exotic jungle landscape or cuddle with impressive gorillas under palm trees. Richard Steiff born on February 7th, 1877 in Giengen, was a German designer. Steiff attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Stuttgart, where he developed and perfected his skills as a toy maker. In 1897 having successfully completing his schooling, Steiff joined his Aunt Margarete's toymaking company and initially started work on a number of other projects before being inspired by a trip to Nill'scher Zoo in the summer of 1902. This particular trip he spent much of his time drawing the residents of the bear enclosure. His sketches of the bear were incorporated into the prototype of the toy Steiff bear he created in 1902 and codenamed Steiff Bär 55 PB. For the first time, the Steiff Summer will be taking place on our company campus in Giengen - a big summer party that is all about Steiff friends and families and offers lots of fun and excitement for all ages.During the hard war and post-war years, Steiff has to adapt its assortment - cellulose-like materials give rise to the so-called "paper teddy bear", toys made of domestic woods are added to the range.
