About this deal

The easy installation and outstanding performance of this horn makes it a favourite of ours, being a perfect solution when replacing your T5 or T6 horns. The single unit means that the entire horn setup is relatively compact and suitable for many engine bars or grilles.

This one never worked, and we’ve heard from other Stebel Nautilus owners who experienced similar problems. I am not an "Inspector Gadget" type of person ... so I have a small question: I saw that there are 2 different relays in the both posts, but is it possible to connect both the Horn and the 12V outlet to the same relay and on the same cables wired to the battery? Or they have to be put on different cables and relays? The horn itself is compact and will fit on most faired and unfaired bikes without too much effort However, as with anything that isn’t OEM, some degree of craftsmanship is required to mount it securely. A couple strips of foam rubber provide vibration isolation and the horn appears to function just the same as the one on the VFR, if not slightly muffled due to the “closed” location behind the Fly Screen.

Owner Comments and Feedback

The photos showing the Stebel horn installed are too dark. I've included several angles, so hopefully you can tell what I've done. If you consider yourself a creative person who loves solving problems and wants the mother of all compact horns, this is the project for you Cycles without radiators won’t have a problem finding a spot on the frame

Our Stebel Nautilus Compact was inoperative right out of the box, so Stebel has some work to do on the quality of these horns. Not recommended. As well as testing and using a number of cars horns within our own cars, we also based our recommendations upon hours of research and multiple factors. The factors that we considered included their decibel rating, ease of installation, type, build quality, supplied accessories, tone options, warranty and value for money. Car Horn Buying Guide

Installation can be a major issue, partially because the shape is very complex and doesn’t lend itself to mounting alternatives. Here is a gallery of the images in various sizes, in case you want to see the original huge (2.5 MB) image. I bought my second from … in Feb., 2012, and also had no problem with that on my Victory Cross Country Tour this year. One of the 12 gauge red wires that is connected to the relay goes directly to the positive terminal on the new horn. The other gets connected to the switched red wire as described in the above linked "12V Power Outlet" tutorial, as shown here. I would estimate the Stebel horn on the VFR has seen roughly 15,000 miles from sweltering summers to cold winters and wet spring/autumn days.

I think the keys — assuming that you don’t start out with a dead one — are to locate it in an area largely protected from the elements, make sure the horn or at least the trumpet openings are pointed down, and of course power it via a relay. The Wolo (519) Bad Boy is a popular replacement car horn that the brand claims is twice as loud as factory horns. It’s a one piece construction that’s easy to install and a direct replacement for many factory horns. In terms of the loudness, the brand states that it outputs at 118 dB using a powerful dual tone. Please refer to LX-150: Installing a 12V power Outlet as well as LX150: Installing a Tiny Tach For instructions on removing the Horn Cover, Legshield liner, and all wiring. Upon inspection, one of the two functioned perfectly. Otherwise, I’ve heard from a very few people who jumped to the conclusion that they had a defective horn, but actually hadn’t grounded the horn to metal as required of any electrical device. If you don’t have the room to be able to do that then, yep, I’d go for something else. Given that I have been able to do that, however, I’ve been very pleased with the Stebel.”I go to the beach a couple of times a week and on the way out stop by local car wash to rinse off salt and sand. Upon first washing after installing S horn, the horn quit working. At first I did not suspect the bike washing, but later determined that must be the problem-although I tried to be careful around the horn, I must have accidentally squirted those naked air ports with water. It’s a compressor based car horn that has a compact design to fit in all locations under the bonnet. The compressor itself is self-contained and the horn is a direct replacement. The Stebel Nautilus is one of my personal favorite car horns and I have installed several over the years. It has a unique sound from the twin tone harmonized horn that outputs at 139 dB. I’m not sure if we’ve ever given a product a “Not Recommended” rating, but what else can we do? The Stebel Nautilus “Max” shown here, which is supposedly rated at 139 dB, failed after only a few seconds of use, four beeps to be exact. Hint Two: adding a small piece of aluminum or steel “L” (a.k.a. angle iron) with a hole for the mounting bolt will prevent the horn bouncing off if the bolt loosens Star washers and jam nuts are a good addition.
