About this deal

Aviation is produced in Portland, Oregon, by House Spirits Distillery. It is distilled from neutral grain spirit with 100 percent rye base, an unusual beginning in the gin market. It's flavored with juniper, anise seed, Elettaria cardamom, coriander, lavender, sweet orange peel, and sarsaparilla. It, too, is slightly overproofed, bottled at 42 percent ABV (84 proof), so it's not as delicate as it's often made out to be.

Another category boost came courtesy of the British Royal Navy. England’s sailors often found themselves traveling to destinations where malaria was prevalent, so they brought quinine rations to help prevent and fight the disease. Quinine tasted notoriously awful, so Schweppes came out with an “Indian Tonic Water” to make it palatable. If you have yet to taste genever, it is unlike any other gin you've had. This style of gin is as if a soft Scotch whisky were married with gin, and Bols' malty feel is a perfect example. Based on Lucas Bols' original recipe from 1820, it has a wonderful balance of sweet malt and subdued juniper and citrus. It is triple distilled using equal parts malt wine and neutral grain spirits that are infused with natural flavors. Making something this good takes time. So small batch just means we purposefully make Oxley gin in limited quantities, so we can ensure the quality of each and every individually numbered bottle. While cold distillation is more common today than it was when this gin first came to market, it remains something of a rarity in gin production. Oxley claims to have invented its own specific cold distillation process, which gets as low as -5 degrees Celsius, and they reportedly took 8 years and 38 recipes to get things just right. Why go through all that trouble? Well, according to them the process creates a more flavorful gin because it enables the use of fresh, as opposed to dry, ingredients, specifically citrus peel. Let’s reacquaint ourselves with this one, shall we?

The fourteen botanicals in Oxley Gin are Juniper, grapefruit, orange, lemon, coriander, cassia bark, liquorice, angelica root, orris root, almonds, cocoa nibs, meadowsweet, vanilla and nutmeg.Today, drinkers can enjoy the diversity of gin.Unlike vodka, each bottle of gin is truly unique. The majority feature some degree of the pine flavor that comes from juniper, which is gin's signature ingredient, yet no two bottles have the same combination of botanicals. The nose is bright with a lot of juniper— there’s nutty hints of coriander seed, licorice and grapefruit zest that give Oxley Gin a robust and full nose. Fans of old school London Dry gin brands will find a lot of similarities between their old favorites and Oxley’s approach.
